Phone calls at POR. How does this work?

We will be leaving in 5 days and be at POR. My cell phone will not be usable once we get there b/c I will be roaming and it would be a fortune..lol So my mom and dad will be watching after my pooches and I want to be able to talk to them to make sure they are ok. How does there phone call system work? Can they just call the hotel and ask for my room? Will that cost? Will I have a direct room # I can give them? Thanks for any advice on this.

If you just use the phone in the room the charges will be more than your cell phone would be for long distance. You might want to pick up a phone card and use that while you are at WDW.

Your folks can call the hotel and ask for your room, and they will be transferred to your room. They will have normal long distance charges on their line. You will not be charged for receiving a call in your room.

If you call them, it will be ridiculously expensive even for a quick call. Most hotels generally have it set up so that the highest long distance charges, and add a 50% service charge to that! I remember my mom making a call years ago from a hotel, and it cost around $7 for a three minute call! Ouch!

When we checking in at POR in May, they warned us NOT to use the phone in the room.

I used to use phone cards from POR. You can buy a phone card almost anywhere before your trip. I used to make about 3 calls each evening.
At the time, I think each call was 75 cents just to use the phone at all. After a while, I discovered a way to make all three calls, and still have it register as just ONE phone call with the hotel. With the card that I used, after the OTHER person hung up, there was a message that the other person hung up, and the question if I wanted to make ANOTHER call. When I responded with a YES, then I just dialed the other number. Doing it this way, I only had to put in the Phone Card Number only once, and this was how it was registered at the hotel.
