Philadelphia Style or French Vanilla?

French vanilla ice cream is made with an egg custard base. Never heard of 'Philly' style ice cream until I saw this post.

I’ve never heard of Philadelphia style ice cream. Vanilla would not be my flavor of choice when there’s so many other good flavors. DH likes any brand that calls it “vanilla bean”.

Yes, read labels !!! most of the ice creams (Dreyers, Edys, Breyers, store brands) are blech....pale imitations of what used to be. Hard to find ice cream with cream as the first ingredient..... read the label !!
That said, I like French Vanilla with lots of chocolate fudge on top !

Sealtest and Abbots are two defunct Philly ice cream brands.

Breyer’s USED TO be a premium brand, but then it was sold and sold again and passed through several conglomerates. It was continually cheapened every step of the way. Now it’s total crap.

Most current Breyers flavors aren’t even ice cream anymore. About three years ago I inspected the packaging on each flavor and found that something like 18 of 24 flavors at Shop Rite were “Frozen Dairy Dessert.”

About five years ago I sent an e-mail complaining and in response I was told that the majority of consumers preferred the frozen dairy dessert.

Sure, Jan.

If that response had the tiniest bit of truth the packaging would shout “FROZEN DAIRY DESSERT” instead of attempting to conceal it in the illustration.

By the way, they sent me a $4 refund check that I never bothered to deposit.

I should turn in my Philly Girl card because I prefer French Vanilla if I'm having vanilla at all.

I never heard of Ice Milk. Interesting....

Ice milk, or iced milk, is a frozen dessert with less than 10 percent milk fat and the same sweetener content as ice cream. Ice milk is sometimes priced lower than ice cream. A 1994 change in United States Food and Drug Administration rules allowed ice milk to be labeled as low-fat ice cream in the United States.

Yes I do remember ice milk. I am trying to recall how long it has been since I have seen that. Whenever it was, it has been even longer since I last had it!

I’m guessing I haven’t seen ice milk in 40 years. Yes, it’s now labeled as “Light” or “Low Fat.”
