Hi everyone,
My husband and I are thinking about taking a long weekend and driving to
Philadelphia and Gettysburg. We want to see the historic sites in Philly (Liberty Bell, etc.) Can anyone give me any advise on a good/clean hotel? Any advise for going to Philly? What area should we stay away from?

Thanks.

Philly, like all cities, is a place where its best to not skimp because you can end up in an 'hourly' sort of place.

I would look for a hotel in Rittenhouse Square with a doorman. I would not go to an outlying area because the city is enormous and filled with pockets of scary places you don't want to be. Like they say in 'American Werewolf in London', "stay on the road" and you'll be fine. We took a shortcut off the Schuykill once when traffic was bad because we had an appointment and didn't want to be late, HUGE mistake that I will never ever do again.

Hey, hey luv. no dissing the city of brotherly love.

Anyway op, Luv has the right advice but you can extend your area a bit. I would stay anywhere in what we call Center city.
The double tree has a hotel right on Broad street. You can walk down Market street to the Constitution center and Liberty bell. Walnut street is near by with lots of really nice boutiques (sp).

Also there is a Marriot near Arch street and the convention Center that is really centrally located. Go check out Reading terminal for good food.

No dissin' the city, I LOVE cities. Its just that the dynamic of a city, ANY city, must be respected. I wish I had a dime for every-time I looked at a tourist in NYC and thought to myself, "There goes a future victim." Nothing worse then watching them whip out a map or lean back so they can stare up at a high-rise... might as well tape $20s to the outside of their jackets and make it even easier on the muggers. The areas with lots of tourists cater to them and have a high police presence to keep the tourist $ coming in:thumbsup2

I grew up in Philadelphia, still live in a very close suburb. My husband and I also stay " downtown" once or twice a year. The Marriott at 12th and Market is nice but adds a few more blocks if you are walking to the Liberty Bell and the historic area. A few blocks closer to the historical areas are side by side Marriotts, a Courtyard and a Residence Inn. They are directly across the street from Philly City Hall. The price is lower than the convention center Marriott but still quality.

There is hop on hop off public transportation line called Phlash which goes through most of the historic sites and is reasonably priced. I strongly suggest using it if you want to see everything in a day. There are also CityPass attractions. If you look it up online and the list of sites are all of interest, it is a significant savings over gate prices for all of those.

The Reading Terminal Market is a great place. It is part farmers market, part world food bazaar. you can get all kinds of ethnic foods as well as local cuisine. make sure you go hungry and tray few snacks. The eclairs at Termini Brothers are excellent. Try to go there on a Saturday because none of the local Amish stands are open on Sunday.

I have stayed at the Hyatt at Penn Landing a couple of times. I liked it. It's just a short walk to the historic area.
