Does anyone have any pets (dogs or cats) on Prozac?

If so, why and does it work?

Karen

Who is considering it for her OCD Pica Kitty. :confused3

Our (late) cat was on Prozac for years. He was very aggressive, and also had a major case of pica (IMHO). We took him to a very good behaviorist who said that our cat was the most extremely antisocial cat he'd ever seen:scared1: I knew something was wrong with our cat, but honestly I didn't think that he was that bad! Anyways, the Prozac helped a lot. He was on the generic kind, and we got the mail order 90 day supply for a cheap price from Walgreens I think.

Our chocolate lab was on Clomicalm which I think is similar to prozac. Prince had severe separation anxiety. He was a rescue pup that was found abandoned in a dumpster. Not sure whether some memory of that caused the anxiety or what, but he was nuts. (He was also the sweetest dog I've ever met.) We could not leave him downstairs if we went upstairs. He'd freak, wouldn't even be able to find his way upstairs. He chewed through his crate (a metal crate), destroyed furniture, carpeting, you name it. He could not cope. One time we went on vacation and left him at a kennel (this was before we realized how bad off things had gotten). He paced back and forth until he wore out his pads on his paws. We shortened our trip, came home and got him. Soon after, we started the meds. It didn't completely cure him, but it calmed him down significantly. And it kept the destruction down to a bare minimum. Sadly, he got sick and died a year ago Valentine's Day.

No, but I know someone who had their cat on Xanax...

We tried Clomicalm with our now-deceased dog Moose, to treat his separation anxiety. It didn't work, so we had him switched to Amitriptylin. It worked SOMEWHAT, i.e. he stopped opening windows and jumping out of our 2nd story apartment, but he did still eat walls and pretty much anything he could get his teeth on.

So, I would say that the results were very mild, but it did seem to prolong his life for a bit by ending the suicide attempts.

Cheers!

Your dog must have come back as my dog. He was the exact same way as a pup. We tried him on the Comicalm, and while it worked, it also made him very doped up and out of it. It was hard for me to see him like that all the time...you could just see it in his eyes. So, we stopped the drugs, and just helped him through as much as we could. He still has his issues, but not nearly as bad as he did. He chews shoes once in awhile...especially if we leave them out after we are gone from the house.

I know you said cats or dogs, but my parrot was on Haloperidol once. She was a feather picker and the meds made her mellow out. But it worked too well and she was always sleepy and ended up losing weight for not eating enough

I had a kitty on valium years ago. One of our cats had been in a fight outside & can in to the house & attacked our inside cat (out of fear I guess). Well, the inside cat just freaked. Hid under the bed. Wouldn't come out. Peed & pooped under there. This happened for weeks. We took her to the vet. $2 worth of valium for a couple of weeks..and she was good as new.

We also did the valium thing again when we moved. She was exhibiting similar signs after months in the new place. Fixed her right up again.

Cheap stuff.....to make a happy kitty. :thumbsup2

I get so sad when I think about what these poor dogs went through before we rescued them. I can't imagine what it was like to cause them to have the separation anxiety and desctructive behavior. Did Moose have night mares? Prince used to get them regularly before meds and occasionally after them.
