So glad Pete is back after what was obviously a very difficult time. My wife and I send our condolences to both he and his family.

Pete's return to today's podcast was highlighted by a rant about recent incidents with "idiots" bringing loaded guns into the parks. :furious: Pete's primary point was WDW is PRIVATE property...............their rules! Get over it. Stupid moves like this will lead to "all" visitors going through metal detectors........

Way to go Pete! 8-)

I'd rather they figure out a n efficient way to get everyone through metal detectors faster than do this "random" selection process

This summer we were asked to leave our kids in their strollers to go through the metal detectors where they would be out of reach - I'd rather it be something everyone goes through than what they have now.

Be fine with adding x-ray machines for bags too as they really take their time going through bags nowadays (at least it seemed that way to us vs past trips) as that could make things faster too

I haven't heard the show yet, but I believe all guests should go through the metal detectors. They really don't fully address the problem if only a portion of guests have to get screened.
Based on how they are going to change security I would imagine everyone will soon have to go through security.

I am a big supporter of gun owners' rights. That being said any private entity, Disney included, is well within it's rights to deny anyone entry if they are armed. This shouldn't even be a problem, why in God's name do you think you need a gun on Disney property? I have never felt threatened in a Disney Park (but my wallet has, yeesh Disney!)

I haven't heard the show yet because I'm in a Politics of Developing Nations class right now, but I can't wait to hear this :)

I've been to other amusement parks where every turnstile was a metal detector so every person entering the park passes through a detector. If Six Flags can do it, I'm sure Disney can manage it.

Based on current work it seems it will be done. For example at MK guests taking the monorail will be screened at monorail resorts and the TTC, guests taking the ferry screened at the TTC, guests taking resort boats screened at the resorts, guests walking from CR and taking buses screened to the right of the MK entrance near where the buses let off.

It will be really interesting to see how that works out with the different areas - as it would be nice to sufficiently execute this while freeing up the entrance from these lines

I know out at Disneyland they do the security checks before you get into the esplanade between the two parks so that area feels very open

So happy Pete is back. Sorry for his loss, but I missed him. Craig and everyone did a great job, but its just not the same without Pete. He came back with guns blazing (pun not intended) at an appropriate rant. I'm pro 2A and pro constitutional rights in general, but I hate it when the extremists think its their responsibility to try and defy a private institution. You may not agree with their policies, but no one says you have to go either. ALL OF DISNEY PROPERTY IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. THEY MAKE THE RULES. Stop making responsible firearms owners look like idiots. You have a right to own and carry a firearm if your local laws allow, just like any one else has the right to not want firearms on their property.

But, glad to have you back Pete. Hope you and your family are well.

I agree with everyone. I also agree about Disney not wanting to spend the money, but I think they need to. At my local 6 Flags park, there have been metal detectors for the past 10 years. Everyone goes through it. It is quick an efficient. This is a park that lacks on so many areas, but their security and bag check proceedings are quick and efficient, and thorough.

So that would mean that everyone boarding the monorail will be screened regardless of destination. They can't know who is going to MK and who is just hopping over to the Poly. That's a whole new level of security. I'm not quite sure how I feel about that.

Yes I believe so.

I can see this working at MK since you can't get there without either going through TTC, monorail, bus or walking via CR, but not at the other parks. How would you know a person was getting off a bus or had just parked or taken Uber.

They wouldn't do it at the other parks. Other park entrances have seen permits already for work which to me signals more metal detectors in a permanent setting. AK, Epcot, and DHS all have more space around their entrances to work with. MK doesn't have that luxury.

I don't believe there is any possible way to fully address the problem with metal detectors. There have been metal detectors and XRay machines at airports for as long as I can remember, and yet all kinds of banned things still get through - including weapons and explosives. (Just one source, in this study something banned got through 95% of the time).

I think the unseen security Disney employs is far more effective than anything else. I don't think it's an accident that there hasn't been a major incident there.

Creating more bottlenecks outside the parks - whether it's directly in front of MK or at the TTC, or any of the other parks - is also dangerous. All of it is still "Disney property" and anyone who wants to do something need not go through security to make international headlines.

Agreed, I don't think it's a coincidence at all. Like you continue to say someone doesn't need to go through park security to do something "on property." If someone is motivated enough they'll find a way.

These unseen measures that we can probably be certain exist do a wonderful job, but it's our jobs as patrons of the parks and properties not to be complacent. We all enjoy the Disney bubble, but more often now it's becoming harder to separate the two worlds. That being said, leave the security to how Disney wants to conduct their security. Be observant, don't be complacent, and work with the people keeping you safe. Don't try to do their jobs for them.

I don't think moving security around will create more bottlenecks, it is going to spread out the crowds helping the current bottleneck in front of MK.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree - especially with MK. But we talked about that already :) Regardless, my point was that any security point presents an area before security where people are gathered, and that alone presents a target. Brussels saw that last year. There's only so much that can be done to prevent that. No security is instantaneous. And if places that have done this for *decades* only have a 5% success rate in actually catching weapons, then that leaves me with the thought that perhaps the method itself just is not all that effective.
