Great blog! I'm ready to go and do Hawaii this way someday...and hopefully will after I get another kid graduated and out of the house.

In the meantime, Pete, you need to give Volcanoes National Park another chance. It's been a long time since I was there, but I just booked an inter-island flight there from Maui a day or two before I went. Granted, it wasn't raining the day I was there, but it was one of the most interesting days I've ever spent; one of the highlights of my life! (i.e. It was better than the sunrise on Haleakala.) I hope you'll get the chance to have an amazing time at Volcanoes National Park some day - it's a real bucket list experience.
