Peter Phillips Renouncing Succession

you just gotta love the british patriotism!!!

That is one thing that i love about the americans.. how proud they are of their country and heritage..

as you can tell.. in general the brits couldnt care less!

The only time you see the majority of british choosing to feel patriotic is during the football world cup! (I find that even more depressing!)

Hmmmm......
I think the American Constitution is far more about the country and it's citizens whereas the British model is far more about protecting those that "have", like the Royal Family and not so much about those that have not. We are not encouraged in this country to try and strive to penetrate their world.
In the US it believed that you have opportunity to make whatever you can of yourself. Here we are brought up to respect a group of people due to their birthright - it's wearing thin with most of the public, and lets face it they're not exactly a model family. In this day and age I can't relate to people that write to each other even though they are in the next room and that are not happy if there is more then .7 of a cm of toothpaste put on their toothbrush by their butler!
I don't understand why they should gain our automatic respect when they haven't done anything to earn it:confused3
In the absence of this respect people will attach their patrioitism to things that represent their country worldwide in other ways like sporting events - it's human nature, we want to be seen as winners.

Yes Anne decided when Peter and Zara were born that they would not hold the title 'HRH'. Although Queen Zara has a certain ring to it!!

I dont think the royal family ask for our respect. Im not a "royalist" as such.. but like it or not, they are part of our heritage and our country is much richer as a result of it.

I dont envy them ONE Second of their life! How awful must it be to be scritinised and criticised for the family you are born in to! The Queen, has been an amazing monach.. She has dedicated her life to this country and the citizens of the UK and Commonwealth - and they (the royal family) more than pay for what they do for this country

I am so proud of the heritage that we have in this country. Our amazing buildings - the incredible history that the United Kingdom has. How as such a small country we have such a large presence within the world. How so many of our ancestors have achieved extraordiary things. It just seems a shame that the negative attitude found within many british people these days seems to be the driving force.

I always watch The American Adventure at Epcot and come out wishing that the UK could pull together and feel proud of what we have around us and what we can achieve together rather than complain about what we dont have.

We are patriotic but are also reserved and don't make an exhibition of it.
Being a royalist and being patriotic are two very different things. I have a lot of respect for the Queen - but the younger royals are a different matter entirely.

Our patriotism is well summed up by a slogan competition on the BBC. The French have "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" the Americans have "In God We Trust" one entry for a UK slogan was "Musn't Grumble".

I hadnt read this anywhere in british newspapers, must have been way down the headlines from the Diana inquest...........

Very well said. I don't want to be flamed nor upset anyone, but my view is that the whole idea of the head of state being a person born into the role rather than one voted for by the people is as far away from democracy as you can get.

I think we're talking about two different things, this thread was about the Royal Family which I agree with you isn't the only way in which we should celebrate being patriotic or passionate about our country.
I too agree that we have a fabulous heritage in this country, and they we are still considered a powerful, respected nation - considering our size.
I think the point about this thread was that the majority of the posters didn't give a hoot about (a minor royal like) Peter Philips and hadn't heard this news whereas our American cousins had :confused3 it made us come across as anti-royal family (which I don't think is un-patriotic).
I am not an anti-monarchist I just feel the Royal Family are so out of touch with the vast majority of people in the country.
As for not envying their lives being in the public eye - the press only have an obsession with them due to the way that they like to be percieved, they don't want you or I to know if they get on their bike and go to the local shops, they want us to know very little about how they fill their time when they are not conducting public engagements, and because of this the press do follow them and report for "gossip" sake. More minor European Royals can cycle past you on the street in places like Amsterdam and the population hardly turns its head as they are not a Royal family pretending to be something that it's not.
Constitutionally the Queen doesn't really rule as the King or Queen would have done in centuries gone by but they still conduct themselves like they do when really most of their time is taken up with public engagements and charity work. Our Queen has become a "figure head" of state.

Just wondering how Brits on this board feel about Peter Phillips renouncing his place since his fiance is a baptized RC. Do you think the law should be changed? Do you not care? How do most Brits feel about this issue? I must say that as an American I think the controversey is misplaced-if you get my drift ;)

If Peter Phillips renounces his place does that mean any future children of the couple are excluded as well? I do know that other members of your royal family have converted and lost their place (I'm thinking about the Kent Dukedom here), but their children have not.

Returning to the OP, Peter Phillips should renounce any claim to the throne if he has any intention of marrying a Roman Catholic - this is the law whether you like it or not. The law does not cover marriage to a Hindu, Muslim or Jedi;)

Should the law be changed? As the country is the founding country of Anglicanism, and this is the predominant faith I personally see no need to at present.

Do we care? - I think that has already been answered above. It speaks volumes that several posters couldn't remember who Peter Phillips is!

It does mean that any issues (children) of Peter Phillips ARE excluded from the line of succession as well.

This is as per the Act of Settlement 1701.

Additionally, to marry Peter MUST have the permission of Her Majesty or Parliament otherwise the marriage is illegal.

Hope this helps.

... and yet there is no such thing as a British world cup football team :rotfl: ;)

It has probably much to do with the fact that through their own actions the royals have lost much of their appeal and relevance in a modern society.

A quick update - the issue is no longer!

Autumn Kelly, the fiancee of Peter Phillips has given up her Roman Catholic faith and converted to the Anglican Church.

Peter Phillips will therefore remain in the line of succession.
