Pet Peeve at the World...Anyone else?

I also saw people smoking in non-designated areas this past trip. One was right outside of Rock N Roller Coaster, then again walking away from Rock N Rollers Coaster there was a group. They were not right beside us, so I didn't say anything. If they would have been very close by I would have because I had my 3 year old with me. But, I really don't feel it is my place to say anything. Like others have said, if there is no smoking except in designated areas then the CMs need to enforce it. Which they weren't. These people were out in plain sight and not even attempting to hide it.

I think the problem is that while most people comprehend that they are harming themselves with smoking they do not understand the damage they are doing to those around them. If it was just a personal issue that only affected the individuals choosing to smoke there would be no controversy. The reality is that unless you choose to smoke in a room by yourself you are most likely subjecting someone else to your habit, and the health risks there of. As far as rights referred to by a previous poster, If you were only harming yourself I would totally agree with you, go ahead smoke yourself silly. But the reality is you are harming anyone who has the misfortune to cross your path and that's where the problem lies. I don't understand why a persons "right" to smoke should be more important than my child's right to breathe.

I don't know why I feel like I need to defend smokers because I'm not one but I do.

Even being a non-smoker I wouldn't even think twice about someone smoking, in fact, I don't think in all my times at WDW I ever saw anyone smoking probably because I'm too busy having a good time and not paying attention to those around me and yes, I do have a young child.

The only way to solve this issue would be for either 1) the government to make cigarettes illegal or 2) for WDW to ban smoking in all parks (which I highly doubt they would do), that's the only solution I see to this because smokers will continue to smoke and CM's will continue to NOT enforce the smoking areas.

Not trying to debate anyone here but just think that EVEN smokers need defending.

All I can say is that YES I DO, DO IT POLITELY!!! YES IT IS POSSIBLE TO NOT BOTHER A NON-SMOKER WHEN YOU SMOKE.

Until cigarettes are deemed illegal (which will NEVER happen) then smokers will continue to smoke. Yes, it's a bad habit, yes it CAN cause health problems but we are all adults and can do whatever we want to do within the law and smoking is STILL within the law.

Smokers will never understand.....untill they become ex-smokers

I have 4 children of my own. I have many friends who smoke and many who don't. We often have a debate about 'air quality'. (I don't always win BTW) It would seem that those people who are so frightened about children's lungs not to mention grownups; should be harassing big business, big polluters - not smokers. IMHO, air pollution caused by the planes that bring us to the Wonderful World of Disney cause more damage to our little one's airways than the whiff of a smoker's cig while standing outside. It's not like non-smokers are being locked in a room with hundreds of lit cigarettes. I don't mean to make small a huge problem like asthma (my daughter is afflicted) but I would just like to mention that perhaps picking on the little guy (fellow people who happen to smoke) is not really the answer. Just because it's a convenient gripe doesn't fix the real problem. It may be harder to deal with the growing concern of air quality in this country, but this issue cannot be shouldered by a few Marlboro Men.

Just my two cents, I apologize if I have offended.

Its not enought that the smoking areas are outside and away from everyone for some people.

Perhaps we should ban alcohol in WDW also, because some people get drunk and act obnoxious and can potentially hurt my child, or someone can drink and drive and potentially hurt my child...................

Your right...but when they do they can be put in jail...can't do that to someone smoking on main street...yet. For you smokers who only smoke in designated areas...good for you, and thank you. I'm not happy with other forms of air pollution either....but if you're a smoker and you're comparing cig smoke to car exhaust...don't you thinks its time to quit...or at least save yourself a couple of bucks and just take a whiff from your exhaust from time to time.

When I WAS a smoker, I made sure no one was around me if I were in public, that's what I mean. I've even moved from a designated smoking area because there were people NOT smoking and I didn't want to smoke around people NOT smoking - that's being polite/considerate if you ask me.

i think that the designated areas are not marked all that well, wouldn't surprise me if most guests didn't even know about them. if you are bothered by someone smoking in a non-designated area, feel free to ask a CM for help, many people did that when I was a CM. sometimes CM's don't see the person with the cigarette.
i was at epcot for food and wine in 2002 when a woman burnt a little buy in the face with a cigarette. he was running by and smacked into her hand, which had a lit cigarette in it. burned him badly right above the eye. if he had been an inch taller...i shudder to think....
although alcohol is only available in one park (epcot), i don't think banning smoking would really work. maybe if the designated areas were enclosed instead of just little benches out in the open.

If reading the concerns of others motivates a few smokers here to be more mindful of the lungs and faces of the children around them I think this discussion does serve a point.

My neighbor's mother-in-law accidently touched her grandson's face with her cigarette. It left a scar on the baby's cheek. I'll bet she has learned to be more careful! Too late for the baby, though.

I think the real debate here is that NOT ALL SMOKERS are careless/inconsiderate when they smoke and just because someone smokes doesn't make them inconsiderate/careless, does that make sense??

I just hate to see all SMOKERS lumped into one category which people tend to do and I'm NOT even a smoker, DH is a smoker (and one that doesn't like smoke and won't smoke indoors, go figure) and maybe that's why I feel the need to defend smokers when I'm NOT one.
