Pet odor???

All of the sudden, my rug smells as if my dog forgot to go outside. I have tried baking soda to no avail.

Any recommendations?

Has the weather gotten warmer where you live?

Last year we found out my pug had been peeing in the corner of our living room area rug for what looked like all winter. Well, we didn't notice an oder until the weather got warmer. When we found Buttercups special little spot, it was so bad that we had to replace the entire area rug. I am just thankful that it did not damage the wood floor due to the fact that we had a thick pad. We wound up putting a pet gate to the living room and havent had any problems since.

So anyway, you might want to watch your dog like a hawk to see if he/she is going in your house.

If your dog did pee on the rug, you will need an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle or Simple Solutions. You can get it at Petco/Petsmart. Thoroughly soak the spot(s) using enough product to soak through the pad (if it is carpet and not a rug), leave it to soak for 30min+, then blot dry using a clean towel. I almost always repeat a 2nd time.

You can also use white vinegar mixed with water to neutralize the odor, although I don't know if it actually breaks down the urine enough to where your dog can't smell it so they won't potty there again. Nature's Miracle really is the best product for doing this.

I have a cat who had some bladder problems and liked one spot on the floor. We finally got his health under control but then I needed to work on the smell. I tried a ton of different thing, but none of them really took it out. I recently got Icky Poo on Amazon and it seems to have really taken out most of the smell on the first round. I'm hoping the second round will take out the remainder. But I will say it worked way better than anything else I tried.

Nature's Miracle works wonders at our house with our cat pee problems. Gets the smell out.

I haven't found much success with one treatment product or another, but I have found a great method for extracting the odor with whatever product you use (I'd start with the vinegar water mix).

This was a suggestion given to me by a professional steam cleaner guy. You need an old iron you'll never use for clothing again and an old towel. Once you've left your treatment to soak awhile, lay the towel on the area. With the iron at it's hottest setting, start ironing the towel. It works like a steam cleaner and pulls the odor and stain out into the towel.

I've never found any method that works better than this. I have a steam cleaner for general household carpet cleaning, but I always bring out my handy dandy old crummy iron for pulling out trouble spots.

Just to add real quick, I've only ever tried it on neutral / beige type carpeting, so if you have a dark or rich colored carpeting, try a small hidden spot somewhere to make sure the carpet color doesn't come up too!

Please be careful , especially if it is carpet under warranty. We do carpet cleaning for a living, 30 years. Do a test spot in a hidden area of a closet.
