Ya'll be careful with your four-legged friends....

WASHINGTON - A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6. The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — http://www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (800) 551-7392.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said.

The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada

Wow!! Thats really scary, considering I feed my dog and cats wet food occassionally as a treat.

Thank you for letting me know!!!

It's funny you mention this - I always bought the walmart brand and my kitty McKinley loved it - about 6 months she just stopped eating it - in fact refusing to do so and meowing at me - I changed to 9 lives and she has been fine - I wonder if the two things are related?

I know a while ago BENEFUL was having some problems but I think they determined it was bad storage. Not sure if this has anything to do with that.

What sux is they're making us wait until tomorrow (Sat) to see which ones are recalled!!!

The link is not working. If anyone finds the info about what brands are affected, could you please post it here? Thanks.

ETA - Oh, I just read it will be available tomorrow. I'll check again then.

Thanks for the info.

My beagle gets an occasional wet foil packet. Yikes.

herc..

There are some big name brands included in this - I hope everyone's pet stays healthy!

Thanks very much - went through our cupboard and found 5 of the cat foods and 2 dog foods. Our local market here sells them under the PAWS label. I will get them back to the food store. Our pets are too valuable to us to have them sick. Caroline

Very interesting......because my cat died of kidney failure a couple of months back. I was at the time feeding her Nutro that came in those little foil packs. I can't say that this is definitely linked, but I do find it very interesting. The vet did remark that she was young to be dying of kidney failure. She was 8. I don't remember the exact dates of when I started feeding her the food, but I remember going into the vet, him telling me that she was dying, and saying to the Vet Tech "Merry Christmas, your cat is dying!"

Add Iam's wet food to the list, but only certain lot numbers. I switched from Iam's to Pedigree to save a little money and now I'm glad I did. So far Pedigree doesn't seem to be included.

Okay, I'm ignorant concerning this...but what is "wet food"? All I know is either "canned" or "dry". :confused3 So, if your pet eats canned or dry, does that mean they are in the clear?

In this case it is some canned food and the foil pouches of chunks in gravy, stew, etc. To be safe you can check the Menu Foods website for specific brands, lot numbers and flavors. The Iam's brands are listed on Iams.com.

Thanks! I've never even paid attention to foil packs that are available. Sure hope *everybody* catches this before something bad happens to their "babies". :worried:

They have added some names to the list including Iams and Eukanuba etc etc...

Please be careful

i tossed all my Iams even though they had different batch numbers. I refuse to let my cats eat anything from that place.
