I ask for and got a pestle and mortar (sp??) for Christmas. It's HUGE! and either marble or granite. So how do I clean it? Is soap and water ok?
thanks!

Since you're asking, I'm guessing it didn't come with directions! I would think that either of those would be fine in soap and water if the stone is polished - which I'd assume for that item. It would similar to a countertop and soap and water are fine for those - nothing abrasive.

I know about this because my husband sells marble and granite for countertops, flooring, etc. If you like that the mortar is shiny- then go to a tile store or home depot and buy stone soap. You should never use household soap- even like disnwashing soap because it with actually rough up the surface and make it loose it's shine. I always cringe when I see people using windex on granite- in a couple of years their counters are no longer shiny because they are actually scratched by the chemiclas in teh cleaning product. Of course if you don't really care if it says shiny or not you could use household soap. It's purely a question of appearances!

Wow this post reminds me of chemistry class! We got to use mortar and pestles for grinding leaves and MgFe, or the stuff found in flameless ration heaters. The grinding was the most fun part of the lab :flower:
