Our Disney/Orlando Trip Part I - Planning
All righty then. Time to try and give back to all of the good people on this board who made our trip to Disney and the surrounding area such a success.
We decided late last year that this Summer would be a most opportune time to take our kids to Disney. So back in February we started planning in earnest.
The cast of characters:
Me - 37, tireless vacationer, thrill-ride lover, blessed with a good job, a nice home, and a beautiful family. (Must be the payoff for years of misery with my beloved New York Jets.)
DW - 36, beautiful, busy, successful, slightly stressed out Mom who could really use a vacation where we just get to relax. Good thing we're going to Orlando in June, huh?!?
DD - 9, great little girl who needs a little bit of magic in her life - she's growing up waaaaaaay to quickly.
DS - 8, a carbon copy of me in miniature, much to my DW's chagrin. He's a little bundle of energy and a super little kid.
So we really have just one requirement when we go on vacation nowadays. We need space. We cannot put the four of us into a hotel room for a week and come even close to enjoying ourselves. So we look for condos wherever we travel nowadays. Two bedrooms is preferable, but we could make do with one.
So when it comes to travel, I'm a bit of an obsessive planner. Which is what led me to this website 4 months ago. I read about resorts. I read about swimming pools. I read about restaurants. I read about rides, and pins, and autograph books, and fireworks, and I read and I read and I read. I even read every single page of that ridiculously long "Best Themepark Secrets" thread that resurfaced a few weeks ago. So I guess you can say that I was as well prepared for this trip as I could be.
We decided to stay offsite, and in an effort to get some relaxing downtime we decided to do just 4 parks. MK and EPCOT were must dos, and we decided to do SeaWorld since my kids had never been there and IOA since we like thrill rides. (Brfore some of you guys pass out, let me just say that this wasn't our 1st time to Disney - the kids have already been to AK and MGM...) That would leave us with at least one full day to relax by the pool and soak some rays into our pasty white, NE Pennsylvanian bodies. So we wanted to find a place with a cool pool to keep the kids occupied. With those criteria in mind, we opted to stay at Sheraton's Vistana Villages on I-Drive. We booked a nice package through Expedia - 4 round trip airfares from Newark, non-stop at good times and 7 nights in a 2 bedroom villa with daily housekeeping for less than $1900. Good enough. I know that I could've probably saved some $$$ by booking a promotional stay that included a 2 hour timeshare pitch, but I'm not doing that ever - particularly on my vacation. (For more of my thoughts on the subject, read some of that "Saying 'No' to Timeshare" thread.) I e-mailed the resort a few weeks in advance, and thanks to info culled from this website I requested a top floor room in the new Keys section of VV. We booked an SUV through Alamo for less than $200 for the week to help get us around, as we're definately not bus people.
As for dinners - we sat down with the kids and booked a couple of reservations. After a lot of reading of people's favorite experiences, I was sold on getting a patio table at the Rose and Crown for Illuminations, so I got a 7:50 ADR for Wednesday. I knew that being seated outside wasn't guaranteed, but I was determined to make it happen. In addition, we thought that the Luau at the Polynesian resort would be a nice way to wrap up our trip, so we booked the 5:15 show on our last full day, Saturday.
Other than that, we were going to play it by ear. The only thing we had to do was go to EPCOT on Wednesday, since that was when we had an ADR. I don't know how a lot of you do it - having all of those ADRs lined up for every night of your stay. I guess I'm not that organized. I kinda' like going with the flow a bit - letting the day take us where it will. Of course, this doesn't allow you to get into some of the most desired Disney restaurants, so I guess it's a bit of a give-and-take thing.
So, in my mind's eye, this is what our vacation was going to look like:
Sunday - Travel, check in, hit the grocery store, hit the pool, just chill.
Monday - MagicKingdom.
Tuesday - Hang by the pool - more chillin'.
Wednesday - EPCOT, R&C for Illuminations.
Thursday - SeaWorld.
Friday - Islands of Adventure.
Saturday - More chillin' poolside, Luau at Polynesian.
Sunday - check out, travel back home.
Sounds good, right?!?
Well, a few days before our trip, we found out that we would have an unexpected guest along with us. Alberto.
Next - Day one. Airplane, Alamo and Alberto.
