people being upgrated from value to studio or 1 bedroom

AKV and BLT are not completed yet. The allotment of rooms there is not available as it is at SSR and OKW. Upgrading folks to those DVC resorts wouldn't work.

Do I think all of this is fair? Heck no, I have an All Stars reservation during free-dining because I wanted a great deal and I didn't get upgraded.

But as I tell my 11-12 year old students all of the time: Life Isn't Fair
I have had students who have had siblings die, children who have a parent with cancer or worse, have died from cancer--these things in life truly aren't fair, especially to a child, so complaining about upgraded rooms--really now, let's move on!:confused3
If they are renting rooms through CRO, than they have inventory to upgrade those guests.

I'm not complaining, but I think it's perfectly fine to do so. After
all, many things would never have changed if people didn't speak up.

So what you're saying is DVC's financial results are independent from the rest of the Disney company?

Hmmm, something tells me Disney is interested in selling DVC shares as well as freeing up those cheap rooms.

CRO's financial results are not independent from Disney's, but they are independent of DVC's. I am talking about CRO's reason for the upgrades.

I did not say Disney is not interested in selling DVC, I said CRO is not necessarily interested in doing so, therefore the motivation for the upgrades are not to sell DVC shares, but to fill rooms. Disney, as the parent company, is interested in making money, no matter what division it comes from, but each individual division wants to maximize their own profits.

Except the buzzword in business for the last decade has been "synergy", and I know Disney likes that. I'm sure one exec. said to the other, "if we do this, then you'll sell more of that" and the other replied, "Wow, that's great synergy". LOL

I hear what you're saying. I did not mean to imply the different divisions of Disney do not want the others to do well, what's good for Disney is good for all. As I said in my original post, selling DVC would be a byproduct of the offers, which is good. I was just talking about the main motivation for the upgrades in CRO's view.

BTW, I used to work for a major multi-leveled corporation and believe me, those buzzwords were used by corporate execs only (and those who were trying to impress the execs). Us on the grunt level used to laugh when they were used. Did you ever hear of "Buzzword Bingo"? I think there was a commercial a while back on it. Also the new, hip buzzwords would change on a day to day basis. Now I work for a small, locally owned company and the buzzword is "Get to work or you're fired." Those are easier to understand...LOL.

This all makes perfect sense to me. My hunch is that this is driven by the observation that value rooms are the easiest to fill. If you are hurting for revenue and need to increase it and you have a finite number of value rooms, the question becomes "how can we extend our ability to bring in revenue with a minimum of spending?" A connected question would be "and how could we do this in a way that has the most potential opportunity for gain/benefit?" That's where DVC comes in. If value bookings decline, then this upgrade deal will go *poof*.

The free internet is a nice perk that we recently received. I used to "ration" use so that I didn't have to pay everyday. Now we don't have to worry about how much we are using it.

Good point :thumbsup2

I totally agree. My wife passed awy from cancer almost 3 years ago when my son was 6 and my twin girls were just 3.

This had been talked about on way too many threads on here. I feel happy for the families that got an upgrade, and happy that I'm in DVC. Having "value" people at SSR makes room for Disney to re-fill the value rooms, which in a down economy are the rooms that are in the highest demand. It's a good business decision by them, end of story.

Why on earth does anyone feel like Disney owes them something because of this? The only think you seserve as a DVC member is the room you get with your points. Disney doesn't gain anything by doling out freebees or discounts to us, it loses money by doing so.

Just enjoy your vacation and be happy you get a great deal on a great room every time you visit.

Actually I think an upgrade to BLT or AKV would work fine. The rooms that haven't been sold or declared yet belong to the developer (DVC). They could do what they want with them - rent them, upgrade people or let them sit empty. They are probably renting these rooms because they can get more than $79 per night (or whatever a value is costing these days). That's the way to help the bottom line - rent the highest demanded ones and give away the ones that no one wants.

I'm so sorry for your loss... you have a perspective that completely echoes mine but you said it so much better than I could.

Life is short and too precious to waste on negative energy... I am delighted that some people who would never have had the opportunity to try some of our lovely resorts will have that chance... their pleasure and good fortune in no way diminishes what I have... which is many wonderful memories and many more to come, God willing... that this helps Disney's bottom line in tough economic times can only be a bonus.

would these upgrades have a positive or negative impact on maintenance fees? Or neutral?

Any thoughts?

Any profit left over from the guests staying on a cash reservation booked through CRO or in this case upgraded, would go to DVC. However, given that the upgrades were from $90/night rooms, I highly doubt there will be any profit left over. I really doubt that this would impact maintenance fees--so I am going to say neutral because I have to believe, hope, that this does not negatively impact our fees. Things would get even uglier than they already are! My only concern is the housekeeping budget--considering these rooms will be cleaned daily--someone has to pay these employees for the extra hours they'll be working--hopefully there is enough money from the guests' reservations to cover this--thus my feelings that there won't be any profit from these upgrades.

My thoughts to, during the time frame of the upgrades will there be more mousekeepers, if not how will they do all the rooms with the upgraded getting daily cleaning, I see this as only a loss for DVC members, not a good thing.

There would have to be some sort of system in place to cover the maintenace and housekeeping. Likely at every resort, DVC or non-DVC, the number of CRO occupany days are added up and a set fee transferred into the operating costs of that resort. How else could they track if a specific non-DVC resort were profitable? You know each resort has its own budget and accountability. How else was it decided to be more profitable to transfer the Disney Inn/Golf Resort to the military for Shades of Green? One thing Disney has no lack of is bean counters.

Much like the DDP transfers a set amount per meal into the restaurant where the DDP was used.

Well we are DVC and were staying on points at AKV Jambo during the 4th of July...we booked 2 studios for that weekend as we added on those days last minute and thats all they had available. On the 5th we moved to a 2 brm. For the 3rd and 4th we were upgraded to a 1 bdrm on one of our studios, the other was not upgraded...we were so excited the extra room we wanted and we got it for free...Our 1st ever upgrade in the 3 and half years we have had DVC, but it was a good one!
