DD 9 would like to have a pen pal. She is particularly interested in someone from another country. I have no idea about a source for something like that. I looked at some sites, and I just don't feel comfortable giving our address, etc. in that way. None of them gave me a fuzzy feeling.

Any ideas?

Just wanted to say what a great experience having a penpal can be. When I was 7 and living in NJ, and she was 8, I started writing to a girl, Dale, in Louisiana. Her father and my Uncle (by marriage) met in the service and became good friends. Dale's father married a woman from Louisiana, and Dale's older sister met and started writing to my older cousin. Then my older sister started writing to Dale's older sister, and then asked me if I'd be interested in writing to Dale. I wish I had those early letters! I met her a couple of times...once about 30 years ago, and again 17 years ago, in Louisiana. We are now 51 and 52, and still keep in touch. :) She's in Arizona now, and I'm in RI.

Best of luck finding a PP for your DD. I hope she enjoys it. :)

Just a thought...have you tried finding someone on the UK board? :confused3

And...umm...did you really eat bird poo? :scared1:

1. Duh. I didn't think of that, thanks.

2. Yes I did. Do you want the details or is knowing I ingested it enough? :dance3:

Mari - I was going to offer up my DD who is also 9 and would also love a penpal but somehow I don't think NJ is considered another country. :rotfl:

I had pen pals beginning in fifth grade and they were a big part of my childhood. I even wrote my college application essay about my attempts---ultimately successful---to find a pen pal in the USSR.

You are wise to be cautious about giving out your address. I gave out my address to an organization and was placed on a mailing list for mail order brides. Boy was that an eye opener for a ten year old!

I recommend speaking to your daughter's teacher. Schools often have information about reputable pen pal programs.

By the way, do pen pals still write letters using pen and paper or is all correspondence done electronically now?

I would try to contact someone at her school to recommend a reputable program. In 7th grade, our French teacher paired us up with kids in France & Belgium as part of the cirriculum. I would feel much safer going that route.

Depends...are you from North Jersey? :rotfl2:
:lmao::lmao: Not North but the elusive "Central Jersey". That's for those of us that don't want the stigma of being from South Jersey or to be associated with the wonderful politicians of North Jersey! :rolleyes1:rotfl2:

I deleted the link. I started reading and the banners and ads on the site were not child friendly!

Maybe you could find a nice family from here. :)

OK...I did a search for "MariDisney" and "bird poo" and found it. (And in the process saw many pictures of maggots! ) Eewwww is right! :scared1:

Good for you for not barfing over the side of the lovely carriage. :thumbsup2
