Pediatric Allergy Testing

My kids have a dairy protein intolerance not a classic allergy. DS tested negative to scratch test. Try eliminating milk for 2 weeks.

My son's pediatrician did the serum testing as he doesn't like to do the scratch test on young children because it is uncomfortable for them.

He has us give Aiden Claritin when it is a season where his allergies affect him, which works well for him. It just might me the Zyrtec that is the problem, not all allergy medications are effective on all people. Claritin and Zyrtec do NOTHING for me, only Benadryl, Dimetapp, and Singulair have ever seemed to help, but Claritin is great for my son. If the Zyrtec doesn't seem to help much, ask if you can try something different.

Thanks for all the info.

Actually now that several of you mentioned it he was on Singulair not Zyrtec (that was my DH on Zyrtec). I can't keep it all straight. ;) We also tried him on Claritin but that didn't seem to help a whole lot and since it was a liquid we had major issues with getting DS to take it.

My biggest fear over all of this is that he will need to end up taking some daily medications because in the last year - 18 months DS has become terrible about taking medications. He is practically terrified to take anything and he gets himself so worked up that he throws anything up that you give him.

If it is a food allergy we will try out best to get it out of his diet and see how he does with that. Or shots are always a possiblity...for some reason they don't seem to really bother him that much. I am the one with the shot phobia in the family. We will just have to see what (if anything) shows up during the test and then decide what to do from there. At this point I think I would just feel better getting a real diagnosis instead of just guessing about what may be wrong.

If your Dr ends up giving you a script for Zyertic tablets or even the syrup you may not have any issues with the meds-They taste real good. Honest real grapey.

Unfortunately it does not appear to be a taste aversion but almost a phobia of meds. :sad2: I could give that kid an M&M and tell him it was medicine and he would freak out and maybe even himself throw up just getting upset and the prospect of having to take medicine. :sad2:

My daughter likes her Zyrtec for seasonal allergies.

A food intolerance won't show up in allergy testing. I had thought DS had milk problems but Pediatrician said to give him milk products unless it was a true allergy. DS suffered severe abdominal cramping, irritability and night screams. A new Pediatrician in the practice recommended backing off on dairy and that helped immensely.
The allergist we took DS to said he himself had a turkey intolerance. He didn't test allergic but if he ate turkey he gor the turkey trots. So sometimes there isn't a definitive test answer and you just have to go by trial and error in eliminating suspect foods or other allergens.
