Pearls from Japan..anyone ever get a terrific one??

When we visited Japan this past August I decided to try my luck at the pearl counter. I made my choice and the lady seemed to think it was a good choice. She rang/hit the gong. Said it was an oversized one. Beautiful silver color. Now, I know nothing about pearls. Anyone out there know if it might be worth my while to have it put in a setting? I don't want to look like a nut going to the jeweler and having him say.." Well, it's nice but only worth about $3.00." What do you all think?

I think if you like it, put it in a setting! Regardless of what the pearl is worth, it holds a sentimental value and will make a lovely piece of jewelry. What a wonderful way to remember a magical trip.

I have picked bunches of pearls....I am trying to get enough to have a string done. I have gotten silver, gold, pinkish, greenish, and pure white. I have even gotten a few sets of twins...2 pearls from noe oyster. They range in size from 6 mm to 8.5 mm and I have had a few of them set. I get SO many compliments on my pearl jewelry and they are priceless to me because of the experience I had in picking them. I say, have your pearl set. Silver ones are rare and a large one makes a beautiful necklace.

you can always save it and bring it back to WDW. They always offer to set your pearls and have lovely settings to choose from. That would be another great WDW memory.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll have it set in either a necklace or a ring and then pass it on to my dd, 9, when she's grown. She helped pick it out. It really is quite beautiful.

You can choose your peal at the Japan Pavaillion in the World showcase for around $13.00. You can also do this at DTD and there is another place in the AK- they all cost the same.
My DD and I both diid this when we went in Feb. We let my DGS pick the peals... Gongs were ringing for my 8.25mm champagne coloured pearl too. My daughter got a really pretty white 0ne though-7.25mm.
We had them set right at Japan and it cost a little under $50 for both of the necklaces we chose.(including the pearl)
My DGS wants to pick us enough pearls to make matching earrings when we go back in Nov.

In June my DD picked an oyster with 2 pearls (Japan at Epcot). She was so happy as she was hoping to get earrings for her WDW souvenir. Being able to watch them set her earrings made the whole experience even more special.

Quick question---do all the oysters contain a pearl or do you take a chance on choosing one that may be empty when opened? I know my girls would love doing this, but don't want to spend alot of money "trying" to get a pearl. Thanks for the info.

I've watched them open many many shells and all have had a pearl in them.
That said, I believe they do guarantee that you'll get a pearl, so if you pick an empty shell, you'll get a second chance.

This was my daughter's favorite thing to do in Epcot. She stood there for over an hour watching all the oysters being opened, and I had to beg her to move on!

I think it's really a fun activity. On one of our trips, my grandmother picked a beautiful and got it set in a gorgeous ring. She wears it all the time and really loves it. I picked a pearl and got it set into a charm for my charm bracelet. Even if you don't pick a pearl, it's fun to watch others do it, especially when a big crowd gathers. The ladies who worked at the pearl station when I was there were so much fun.

I picked one ten years ago on our honeymoon. Dh had it set in a setting with a diamond and made into a necklace on our 5th anniversary.
We are heading to Disney next week (just a few weeks away from our 10th anniversary) and I'm going to have our two daughters each pick a pearl so that some day we can also get their's put into a piece of jewelery.
I never thought about the value of the pearl only the value of the memory it holds and now the sentiment of having our daughter's each pick one on our 10 th wedding anniversary.
So, go for it!!! Have fun picking out a setting for it.

When I was a kid, you could do this at Sea World (I'm not sure if they still offer it). If my memory serves me correctly, they actually had women that would dive into a tank filled with oysters. They would choose an oyster and swim to the surface and hand it to you. Then you took your oyster to a separate area to have it opened. My parents had mine set into a necklace that I still wear. I receive many compliments on it to this day! A friend of mine who is really into jewelry commented on what a lovely pearl I had... he wondered where I had purchased it. I had a good laugh telling him I got it at Sea World.

DH purchased one for me when we were on our Honeymoon.

It is a beauty. About 7 mm and rainbow colored. The pearl lady at the time said that they do not see many like this.

I am so glad to have it.
