Do you have to have/buy a data plan to buy a PDA type phone (Blackberry, Palm Treo, Blackjack)?

I have a Palm Treo and I can have just a phone plan so that I can use the PDA features and the phone features only OR I can add a data plan (which I do) so that I can have internet access.

I love my Treo and use the internet access on it a good bit since I travel for work.

I have been wondering the same thing. From checking out the websites it seemed that Verizon required a special plan but Cingular allowed you to get a PDA phone under a regular family share plan. Does anyone know for sure?

With which provider?

I have the Palm Treo (Verizon). I'm not in love. I will consider trading it for something else next year.

We have Cingular. DH went by one of the stores in our town today and was told he'd "have" to get a plan. This is not our usual Cingular store so tomorrow he's going to our usual store to find out from them. We looked at the Cingular plans and phones through Amazon.com (the attraction was the free PDA phones), but you had to get a data plan - which we don't want right now.

I have a Blackberry with unlimited plan through Work and an I870 with with all the bells and whisles ( have to have SW on-line for the 24hr check-ins) for personal use both are from Nextel as we get a good discount on them.

I think they are looking now at the blackjacks from Cing as some of our Techs have the blackberry's through them as well.

And we are trying to pick between the Treo 680 and the Blackberry Pearl...can't decide which! We are worried about the life-span of the touchscreen on the Treo.

I have the Verizon Pocket PC. With Verizon I can have it like a "normal" phone and still use it like a PDA. But I pay $45 a month to have internet access from it also.

I have the Treo with Sprint. Love it. Use it as a phone a PDA and for the internet. I only pay $20/month for internet access (high speed). Been a great phone and so glad I got it!
