Just got back from a three day stay at the PBH 7-20-10 to 7-23-10.
1-LOCATION- East wing rooms, 2nd floor garden view. Rooms were large and lovely. Bathroom was HUGE! I was working some during this vaca and thought the desk was too small. The wireless internet was very nice and worked well. Our room was about the farthest from the boat dock, beach pool and the lobby. All was closer to the West wing, which I requested and did not get. We just stayed at the Poly and are really spoiled by the Poly's amenities. Our location at the Poly was steps from just about anything we needed, PBH, was quite a hike for everything.
2-TRANSPORTATION- We were really disapointed with the transportation to the parks. The boat was very small and did not hold very many people. One late afternoon, we were three boats deep and as the boats come every 20min, we would have waited 1hr just for the boat! We were told that a bus comes twice an hour, so that was not convience either. We ended up taking and paying for rickshaw's. I loved the rickshaw drivers and service. It is NOT part of the hotels' transportaion, but a seperate serivce. The rickshaw ride took the walking path, 5 min tops. It was great!
3-FOOD. The food court pool side closed at 5PM:mad: Why close so early, the pool was open until 10PM. The pool side eatery, was one of the two non-sit down places to eat. The other sit down restraunts were very expensive and not what we wanted to eat. We ended up eating mostly at City Walk
4-POOLS- the kids loved the beach pool. Great slide, good hot tub and just fun to swim at. The lifeguards would organize pool games. We checked out the quite pools, but did not swim in them. The poolside bar automatically added gratuity to our two beer and two smoothly order. I thought that was strange:confused:

I am glad that I stayed on-site for the perks you get at the parks, but would not stay at PBH again. Maybe try HRH next time???

Yikes - recent reviews here and elsewhere are making me nervous about staying at PBH in December. If it were just for one room, I'd be totally fine, but it'll be very upsetting to be paying for two rooms and being dissatisfied. Weird that the pool-side food court would close so early during the summer.

Did you check out either of the other hotels? I passed on HRH because I'm not into a hotel having a "vibe" (I like my hotels calm and quiet) and I passed on RPR because I don't want to be aware of an amusement park once I return to my hotel (much less actually hearing screams from the park) and the kids really want a slide in the pool. <sigh>

I would truly love to stay at PBH again. Elegant, out of the ordinary ,quiet, large rooms, posh shops.
But staying at RPR this trip for more kid friendly DD9 and more casual friendly. My brother would feel totally out of place at PBH but I am hoping the sushi restaurant in RPR lobby will win him over.

I love PBH. East Wing is a further walk but not that bad. We've never had an issue with transportation. If there is no boat, we walk. In busier times, they add on more boats, so they are running much more frequently than 20 minutes. They probably close Splendido Pizzaria restaurant by the pool at dinner-time so people will eat at the other 4 restaurants. Bice and Mama Dellas aren't open for lunch, so it makes sense to only keep a certain number open at each time.

We have never really heard any screaming at RPH when we have stayed there. While walking to the hotel we can hear some but once you get into the pool area the noise from the music speakers drown out allot of the themepark noise.

We have visited all 3 resorts and the RPR is the one we go with becuase of the kids and I feel that the theming is pretty good, when we went to PBH it just felt odd with all the palm trees with their theme :)

Here is a picture of the real Portofino. There are lots of palm trees.

There are free A/C shuttles to and from the parks. They are usually empty...just FYI for your next trip....

You will not hear any screaming (from the parks) at either resort. PBH is a great resort and you will definitely feel like you have gotten away when you return to your room.

The original OP is comparing the PBH to the Poly which appears to be her favorite resort based on her signature logo so there might be a slight prejudice to the review.

Most of the dislikes

1. location of room - sometimes you get one better located than others. She just came from Poly and everything very close (again, based on room assignment). Of course, if it rains at Poly you get wet going between buildings.

2. Transportation - other good advice has already been given but it is
worth noting that transportation (boats, buses) is controled by Universal, not the resort. Anyway, it's not a bad walk if you take the short cut through Hard Rock.

3. Pool - Seemed to really like everything but the automatic gratuity at pool bar. Not really something that would sway my judgement on a resort but to each their own.

4. Food - As mentioned already, there are many options within the resort. If the food location next to the pool closing at 5:00 is a determining factor, you may want to go stay somewhere else.

Totally agree with you.

I have only stayed at PBH one time and loved every minute of it. It is a gorgeous resort with awesome amenities. Now, the Poly is also my favorite Disney resort, but PBH beats the poly for me.

For food options, did you try Sal's Market Deli? Although Sal's menu doesn't offer a lot of choices, their pizzas are good. The pizzas themselves are reasonably priced, but the tab can get high by adding additional side items to your order.

idk why Splendido closed at 5?

When we were there mid July, we ate there and it was after 5.

Hi! i was just wondering if you had any problems with ants?? Or any other bug?:scared1:We will be there in a little over 2 weeks and have wondered if I should be concerned about the supposed "ant" problem??:scared1: Also can you suggest a location to request that is conveneint to the pool? Thanks!

No prejudice here, just my opinion. I gave my likes and dislikes of the resort. No one has to have the same opinions as I do.

No problem with bugs or ants. My family got many bug bites while staying at the Poly, but not one bite while at PBH.

We requested the East wing to be closer to the beach pool( did not get that request).

The West Wing is closer to the beach pool.

Yep, we ate there one night. We did like the pizzas and breadsticks were yummy.

Ooops, I stated the wrong wing. We requested West, as it is closer, but ended up in the East Wing.

Ya, I don't think anyone requests East Wing. Everyone wants to be close to the boat dock. Can't please everyone I guess.
