I ran to the grocery store thiis morning to pick up a couple of things. I an almost full roll of quarters in my purse left over from the kiddie arcade. So my bill was $8.52, and I decided to pay with thechange/. Well the cashier looked annoyed and so did the lady behind me. I actually was flustered and slightle embarassed and eneded up counting wrong/. I don't understand what the big deal was. Last time I checked quarters were still valid US currency.

I would have asked the cashier and the person behind me if there was a problem? That was just plain RUDE!!!!!!!!

I don't think the problem is change, per se, but the amount of time you take. I'd get as slightly impatient with someone counting out a lot of change as with someone slowly writing a check then recording it and balancing, or with someone who spent a lot of time looking for a credit card.

I do pay with change myself, quite a bit. Usually the day after cleaning house! If you spend the time in line counting it out, so you can quickly hand a known amount to the cashier, I don't think it's a problem at all.

Quarters are money. It doesn't take that long to count $8.50 in quarters to get anyone annoyed.

I pay in change all the time. Change collects up and then, if I want something really quick and my only option is to take $$ out of an ATM when I don't need to, or pay for a cheap item in change...who cares.

Those people who got annoyed at you were just rude.

LOL! Yesterday someone in front of me was paying with coins (not just quarters) $25.10 was their bill. Well, they counted out 19 something and realized they didnt have enough. I was very annoyed. I was in a hurry and these people were looking though their bag for any other possible change. So, I offered to give them the difference. (TBH I wasnt being nice, I wanted them out of my way) They refused and proceeded to try to decide what clothes they wanted to keep.

I swear I was in line for 20 minutes. And yup, I was very annoyed.

I have gotten those kinds of looks when I was just getting the change part of the bill so I didn't have to break another dollar and end up with more change. To me money is money, it is not like you made them wait while you were digging around the bottom of your purse and ending up paying in pennies or anything.

Sometimes I don't understand people. Can you image what kind of life they lead if someone paying in quarters upsets them.

I use change alot. I usually have a purse with 20 pounds of change. I now save it in a jar and cash it in.

I work at a cafe and we only have one register. One time I had someone pay their purchase with all dimes and nickels. It took awhile to count out and I could tell the people behind the person were getting annoyed, because there's only one register, so they couldn't pay until I finished with this person.

I don't have a problem with people paying with change. What annoys me is when I have a kid (or even worse an adult) who is buying a higher price item, and procedes to pay with pennys, nickels, dimes and then maybe a few quarters. They never have it sorted out ahead of time, take forever to count it, and my line starts to build up. I wish theywould take their $35+ in change to a bank and get bills for it!!

What you did was fine, you were paying a small amount in quarters, real easy to count. The cashier at least should have been nicer about it, after all it is their job. I may get annoyed, but I try my hardest to never show my guests that, I wait until they are gone and complain to my co-workers.

I used to be a cashier and I didn't get upset when people paid in change--particularly quarters. It meant I didn't have to go buy change. Now...several dollars in pennies is a pain in the patootie to count out at the end of the day, but quarters are a breeze!

Guess you folks don't frequent the Budget Board very often, do you? We are always talking about saving change for our WDW fund! If I had the roll of quarters it would have immediately been put in the bucket I use to save change. I never pay with change if I can help it. Come visit us over at the BB sometimes.... we do lots of creative things to create MORE change!:p ................P

I got into a fight with a girl working behind the counter at a Dunkin donuts.

I was paying for my coffee with 2 Sacajewa (sp?) dollars.

she's like "you're 1.50 short"

huh? I gave you $2.

"no - these are quarters"

no - they are dollars

"no they aren't"

yes they are

"prove it"

READ the coin - it says DOLLAR on it

I never start out trying to pay with change, but after a few stores, the change I get back from other purchases starts to make my diaper bag HEAVY so I use it so I can get rid of the weight. I hate it when people make me feel poor or guilty for using coins!

I always put my change in my "change jar" (actually it's more like a giant candy jar I've had for years) and I put all of my change in there whenever I have some. I save almost a hundred dollars in a couple of months from just putting my change in there everyday. (which is I call my "Disney Fund")

But anyway, I really don't care if people pay with change. Money is money.

When individuals get that 'upset/antsy' look I always think to myself..."Isn't my fault you're in a hurry." There are times I start to think "Can't this person hurry up!" Then I realize it isn't there fault I am running late or just want to be in a hurry.

Ok - I'll give the differing opinion :)

$8 in quarters wouldn't bug me too much but as a former cashier I will admit that people paying with all change would bother the snot out of me. It takes so long to process and when your transactions are timed to the second it gets frustrating. We were expected to maintain an average transaction time of less that 70seconds per customer, we were also required to recount all currency that was given to us. So imagine having to count $30 of pennies, nickles and dimes twice.

I really prefered credit card and cash (bills) transactions. Checks take forever and would annoy me to.

It's a big fault I know. but I'm an impatient person as a shopper. I was ready to give it to a woman at the grocery the other day. She had about 15 items in the 10 or less lane. Then she decided she didn't want some items because they were too much money (per lb fruit and veggies) and then she wrote a check. It was like one thing after another.

I'm working on being more patient with people. I think it's just a lifestyle change for me. I grew up in the big city where everyone rushed around, now I live in the south people are much more laid back.

edited because I can't spell
