Hello!
We've always done packages before, but this coming trip we bought tickets separately, and have booked our resort room separately, with a deposit.
Do we have to pay the balance at check-in, or can we pay it off before our vacation begins? We'd really like to be able to stat our vacation with a clean slate.

You can call WDW to pay off a room-only balance prior to check-in.
You don't have to wait in the hours long queue to make a payment. When you call, you'll reach the automated "lady". When she asks, "How can I help you...", you say, "Make a payment". The whole thing will be automated at that point and you'll be able to make a payment for the whole balance or any portion you desire. It's really a lot easier than waiting for a human (though I'd much rather). I hope it goes well for you.

Wow, that is really good to know. Thank you!

You can pay it off ahead of time. We pay off our room and tix so we check in with no balance

Curious why you’d do this. If it’s a CC limit thing, you can just tell your CC company and get a temporary vacation limit bump. Ive done that before.

I’ve always wanted to keep my money for as long as possible, so I don’t know what I’m missing.

I usually pay off early for the heck of it. I'm making .01% at the bank anyway.

Many people use gift cards they purchased at a discount to pay off the room.

I like to hide the cost by paying a little bit at the time. If I paid the entirety of my stay at once, my brain would hate it.

I don't know why, it just gives me peace of mind to pay things off as quickly as possible. :)

Even if your credit card company gave you a temporary credit limit bump, might the high balance owed not affect your credit rating?

Nothing long-term. Yes, using a higher "percentage of available credit" can have a monthly impact but, if paid off timely, then it'll bounce right back. No one should view a credit score or retirement account in "real time" if they want to maintain their blood pressure. However, the last thing you want is to accrue interest on that reservation payment and have it cost you more.

Yep, gotta earn that sweet, sweet 0.03% annual interest!

I always do a package too and this time it’s room only. I really wish they would let us pay it off online. I like making payments here and there.

I paid mine ahead of time for peace of mind. Having been a part of the dining cancellation fiasco, I am hoping paid reservations will keep our park reservations “safe”.
