Once onboard, has anyone paid for the $250 dummy cruise deposit with a Disney GC? Having trouble finding a solid answer on that. Thanks!

Thanks! I didn't know if anything on that had changed recently.

The last time I re-booked, you still had a choose a "placeholder cruise", how does it work now? THanks!

We tried to use a gift card for this (on the Wonder in May) but were told we must use a credit card.

If you are on a cruise, I do not see how this would matter. My take on it is that you would spend $250 on board anyway. Use the GC to pay your onboard charges and the cc to put the deposit down. It is basically the same thing unless you didn't have any charges onboard.

Depends on the cruiser. Those who don't drink or do excursions may have very little on their shipboard account.

This was in 2013, 2014, and 2015 but I was able to use a Disney Gift Card for my deposits. Granted I had specific dates and was not booking the generic future cruise thingy...I don't know if that is what the difference was or if they have changed the policy since then.

As you are automatically refunded if you don't actually book a cruise with your deposit, I can see why Disney would not want to allow you to use a gift card to place the dummy placeholder.

The money goes back onto the gift card, and at least my future cruise rep reminded me that it would go back to the gift card. So Disney actually has the money either way... Not sure why it going back onto the gift card would be a reason to not allow it - especially as long as the guest is reminded to hold onto the gift card because that is where the refund will go.

I did this on the Dream in May. I did hold onto the gift card just in case it needs to be refunded back to the card.

Silly question maybe, but can it? I've paid with gift cards before, and any refund was never issued back onto the gift card - I was given a new gift card.
Gift cards are not like credit cards in regards to their "capabilities".

When we cancelled a cruise, the refund was put back on the cards we used originally. I suppose, if you were to tell them that you no longer have the card, they would give you a new one.

This. I only ever have ONE gift card that I use though, so I don't have to worry about which few of the gazillion it is going back on.

I have always been told to hold onto the card because any refund would go to it.

On the Wonder now and used a gift card to book my next placeholder, no issues at all and I've always done this (for at least three years now and every ship). Also, don't forget you can combine gift cards on the Disney gift card site and the CM's love this as it makes it easier for them :)

Now you don't choose a cruise unless you have one. You book an actual Placeholder which isn't associated with any date. Its $250 per cabin (I believe although this may be per person as I travel solo so not 100% sure) and then when you have a date you can move it to them. It lasts for 24 months from the date you purchase it and so can be applied to any cruise as long as it starts within that 24 month period. Once you have a cruise date you phone DCL and they transfer it over. You then have to pay the difference between the $250 and the actual deposit on the cruise within 48 hours to secure your booking. You then get the same offer as if you booked the cruise while onboard (the onboard credit and 10% deposit)
