Depends on the cruiser. Those who don't drink or do excursions may have very little on their shipboard account. If you are on a cruise, I do not see how this would matter. My take on it is that you would spend $250 on board anyway. Use the GC to pay your onboard charges and the cc to put the deposit down. It is basically the same thing unless you didn't have any charges onboard.
As you are automatically refunded if you don't actually book a cruise with your deposit, I can see why Disney would not want to allow you to use a gift card to place the dummy placeholder.
The money goes back onto the gift card, and at least my future cruise rep reminded me that it would go back to the gift card. So Disney actually has the money either way... Not sure why it going back onto the gift card would be a reason to not allow it - especially as long as the guest is reminded to hold onto the gift card because that is where the refund will go.
When we cancelled a cruise, the refund was put back on the cards we used originally. I suppose, if you were to tell them that you no longer have the card, they would give you a new one.Silly question maybe, but can it? I've paid with gift cards before, and any refund was never issued back onto the gift card - I was given a new gift card.
Gift cards are not like credit cards in regards to their "capabilities".

The last time I re-booked, you still had a choose a "placeholder cruise", how does it work now? THanks!
