Friends of mine are trying to purchase their park tickets for a Dec. trip. Apparantly their credit card company charges a 2.5% fee for US transactions, I know it is not much but it is the principal of the thing. Is there any way she can order tickets in advance for the discount but pay for them when she gets to her hotel?

Nothing new about their fees. They've always been there.
Still a burn though

Why not apply for a US$ Mastercard? I got one from BMO. Make US$ purchases using US$ Mastercard; wait for the bill; then pay it off in US funds.

Don't you pay a fee for conversion at some point?

Hmmm ... I didn't know this, totally oblivious me, so if you charge something on your cc you get charged 2.5 cents per conversion - but if I pay via debit or cheque etc I don't?

I think you always pay some sort of exchange fee... cheque rates may be better than CC rates though. Here's an example from RBC:

Cheque rates for 31 October 2007 21:00:12 ET
Converting 0.96 Canadian Dollars to U.S. Dollars will yield 1.00 U.S. Dollars.
Derived rate = 1.0394 (Even though the rate closed today at 1.0527)

ahhh, but you also pay a conversion fee if you write a chq for us funds on your canadian acct. i think it is 5 dollars with bmo. all banks would charge you something.
the no fee us mastercard from bmo is your best bet. there is no charge to have it and you will probably find it handy to have in the long run.:surfweb:

so in the big world we always get charged... it's all about how much your points are worth on your cc that works for me.. I think I'm going to buy some cash tomorrow though .

I'm not sure where you live, but you could have a daytrip to the US, buy some cheap groceries, and visit a DisneyStore. They sell park tickets there. Before you go, visit your bank and exchange some CAN$ to US$. Just a thought.

Yes, the fees have always been there. If you read the teeny tiny fine print on your visa statement, it will tell you that they charge 2.5% for foreign currency conversion.
