Paying for Character meals?

OK, I know that your trip doesn't have to be paid in full until 45 days before you go, and basically CRT and most of the dinner shows have to be paid in advance, but what if you are paying out of pocket for other character meals? Do you have to pay for them at the time of reservation if you are not going to use dining credits for them? Or are they considered part of the trip that you pay 45 days before?

And another question, if you are using dinner credits for CRT and the dinner shows, how does that happen? Do you pay for them and then get reimbursed when you get to Disney? Or do they already automatically take the credits off of your dining plan?

I paid for HDDR when I made the ressie 180 days out. I have a CP lunch, 1900 Park Faire and O'hana breakfast with Lilo and Stitch for character meals and only made the ADR. Pay when you get there. I am NOT sure on how they do it for CRT and DDP-- we are paying OOP so I needed to pay for HDDR regardless.
