Is it normal to have to pay for your reservation to Cinderella's Royal Table when you have the DDP? I thought they just took a credit card to reserve it but they actually charged me!

They will charge you if you book online but will refund the amount when you get there. You can call and have the amount refunded over the phone but some of the CM's will tell you that they'll have to cancel & rebook the ressie to do it and that you may lose your ressie. If that happens say no thanks & call back til you get one that knows how to do it. Otherwise wait til you get there.
The only way to book without all this hassle is to make the original booking via phone call.

If you input your resort reservation number and retrieve your reservation at the beginning of your online session, it's supposed to let you book CRT (and the dinner shows) without charging your credit card for the full meal. It's just supposed to take the credit card number as a hold. However, sometimes there are glitches in the system and it charges the full amount. I haven't had this happen to me, but my understanding is you can call the WDW-Dine line and have a CM cancel and rebook the reservation. There's a chance that you could lose the reservation if they attempt this. The other option is to wait until the ADR, pay with the DDP credits, and then CRT will credit back your cc. Neither is a great option, but they are your only choices at this time.

I just checked my CC online statement and I was not charged for my ressie. I too am on the DDP.

Did you you attach your resort reservation to your ADR?

We are on the DlxDDP for our December trip and when I made my ADR for CRT, my cc was just used as a guarantee and was not charged.

There is a link at the bottom of the reservation page, where it says "I want to use my dining plan to book reservations". I think that you have to make sure that you click on that before going any further. Even if you are "logged in", I think you still need to make sure that you click on that. It will confirm your resort reservation number. Once I do that, there is a little green check mark on the reservation page. I think if you do this, you won't have to "pay". You still need to enter your CC, but it won't be charged.

I think that system is very inconsistent. I had a lot of trouble with it earlier in the year when I was trying to do the same thing. I have done the CC guarantee before with no issues. But this time I linked my resort reservation WITH dining, and it still charged me. I had to call and get it fixed. They refunded, but be aware it can take up to 2 billing cycles to show the credit back. Nice, huh?

Later I tried again when I changed trip dates and was able to successfuly do it on my own.

Just watch VERY closely before you click OK.

I should write a standard reply for these :p, but it's so much more fun doing it over and over again! (No, this isn't a slam at the OP, please don't take it that way!)

CRT (and the dinner shows) have had an issue on the online system since it was launched. They do not always pick up the fact that you have an appropriate dining plan associated with your resort reservation. This leads to the case where you have the DDP and you are still being asked to pre-pay. Normally, if you're on DDP, it's supposed to be a CC hold instead.

When making reservations for these places, look at the "Amount you owe today" before the final confirmation. If it says anything but $0 then you have two options:
  • Go ahead and make the reservation, tying up the money. You will get refunded when it's time to eat (or when you pick up the tickets in the cases of the dinner shows)
  • Stop there, call Disney Dining (and close the window/tab/whatever) and book over the phone. They have their own ways of signifying that you are booking with a dining plan.

Now, if you've gone ahead and booked already, you have two different options.
  • Keep the current reservation and just let them know you're paying with DDP when you dine or pick up the tickets
  • Cancel the current reservation and rebook via Disney Dining phone line.
There have been some reports of success in getting Disney Dining to transfer the reservation to DDP and refunding the money before the event, but these are few and far between (although, it does seem to be happening a bit more often than last year or so). Normally they'd simply attempt to cancel and rebook, which has the potential of losing the original reservation. It is a relatively slim chance, but it exists.

I have a similar situation and wanted to clarify something: I reserved our HDDR dinner with my credit card and will now be using the dining plan. I've never been to HDDR and I understand that I have to pick up our tickets in advance for this event. If I let them know I am using the dining plan when I pick up the tickets will they refund my credit card charge?

I don't want to pay out of pocket for this experience so I want to make sure I can get my credit card refunded even if it is after the 48 hour cancellation window.

TIA

Yes, because at the point where you are actually picking up the tickets, you are not cancelling. You are just changing your payment method.

This is very much the case. Due to glitches in the system, even though you click on "I want to use my Dining Plan", it still charges your credit card for any cc guarantee meals. It doesn't do it all the time, just whenever.:headache: I've booked several cc guarantee meals for my upcoming trip, and some were charged for the entire meal and some were only used for the cc guarantee. Like other pp stated, that's easily fixed with a phone call to Disney Dining.

Thanks for the clarification, I will wait until we get to WDW to make the change so I don't loose my reservation.

Call WDW. They CAN fix this before you arrive. I booked a CRT ressie before I had the dining plan attached to my resort ressie. I paid CRT in full, once DDP was added a CM was able change the CRT to a DDP ressie and refund my money. Be willing to sit on the phone for a few minutes, as it's not a quick fix. We did this in June, like a previous poster stated if a cm says you may lose your ressie, hang up and try again. The CM I worked with assured me my ressie was safe during the changeover. If I'm not mistaken I was actually put on hold and handed over to a supervisor. :goodvibes

I just had them cancel and add a new reservation. The upside is that I got my original choice in time. :):woohoo:

"but be aware it can take up to 2 billing cycles to show the credit back"

Do you mean 2 months or 2 business day? Because I have paid for a meal, and will be booking the dining plan for an upcoming trip and I want to use meal credits to pay for the meal. and really dont want to be waiting 2 months to get my money back. Thanks

They will tell you 2 billing cycles. Which means up to 2 months. I don't know if it really takes that long or not. Could be that they are trying to just cover for worst case scenario. But they mean 2 months.

The guy told me it could take up to seven days to see it credited to my account. It took two days. THEN my husband noticed how expensive the lunch would have been and almost had a coronary. :rotfl:

we currently have the DDP and I'm going to try to book CRT soon (I figure I'll book over the phone to avoid any problems) However, if I do later change my mind and decide to go with the QSDP instead, this wouldn't cause any problems, right? and we could just pay when we get there?

Part of me wants DDP, Part of me wants QSDP (and pay out of pocket for any TS meals) but 100% of me wants CRT.

I know that dining reservations aren't actually linked to our resort reservations & packages, but if I do change my mind it would make me nervous - I'm just not ready to make my mind up completely with which DP works best for our family. (mainly down to me wanting DDP and DH wanting QSDP):confused3

You'll be fine. We always book under our dining plan for CRT so we don't have to pay up front, but pay cash when we get there to avoid using 2 dining credits in one swoop.
