paying for 3 year old?

You are using "loaded" phrases like supposed to have a pass and barely 3. Sorry, if your child passed the birthday she is REQUIRED TO have a pass. Young adults a few days short of age 21 can't (legally) buy a drink and a young adult a few days short of age 18 aren't allowed to vote.

Not sure if your question. Are you asking if others cheat? Some do, many don't? Are you asking if you'll get caught? Probably not but if a CM asks your daughter when her birthay was will she remember to lie or will she hold up 3 fingers?

Not clear of the reason for your post, are you basing your decision on a poll?

If anyone gets offended by this question, I apologize.

My youngest daughter will turn 3 just a couple of weeks before our trip. We are staying off site in a friend's house, so the charge for another child doesn't apply there. But I'm curious about the parks. I know, I know . . . any child 3 to 9 is supposed to have a pass for the parks. But has anyone had experience taking a "just barely 3 year old" and not purchasing a pass? Were you questioned about the child's age? Again, not trying to offend anyone, but would like some input.

Gosh Beth I thought your response would save the soapbox people from having to drag it out for the sermon but I guess not.
crzy4mk---kids 3-9 are supposed to have a ticket. Some people buy them and others dont. I would just do whats right for you and your family. :D

Yeah, me too. :(

Yeah, me too.

If you wanted to be the only one to respond Beth, with what you thought were all the answers, why didn't you lock it? I thought it was an open board..guess I was wrong.
I guess only those who thought it was ok, and were prepared to tell her she's doing the right thing, and wouldn't get caught were suppose to post. Sorry..next time I'll be more careful not to post, once a moderator has answered the question...I wasn't clear on the rules, and that those who thought it was wrong were considered moral police and on a soapbox, as opposed to those who had no problem with it.

Ditto what you said...

I guess I'll add that title to my resume. Thanks.

I think I'll do what right for my family and walk out of Walmart with whatever I can sneak out since we really need the stuff...

I dont think it was so much giving an "opinion" versus putting down the poster and trying to make them feel bad and like a criminal. You can have an opinion on something but you dont have to treat someone that way.

You can have an opinion

But I don't get what you are saying..so it's legal and ok to not pay for a child over 3? It's just my opinion that it's wrong? If someone doesn't pay for something that has a cost, I'm the WRONG one for making them feel bad that they want to cheat?
If she wants to sneak her child in..then that's up to her..but when she asks on an open thread if she'll be questioned for cheating (here is the quote:

I know, I know . . . any child 3 to 9 is supposed to have a pass for the parks. But has anyone had experience taking a "just barely 3 year old" and not purchasing a pass? Were you questioned about the child's age?

then those of us who thinks it's wrong, certainly have the right to state it IMO. If I said, I plan on getting a VCR from Walmart, out the back door for my child to watch on the trip down to Disney, have any of you been questioned when walking out of the store..is it the cost that makes the tickets OK, and the VCR bad? Would it be ok if it was a candybar?

My thoughts exactly. It is actually possible to let someone know that what they are contemplating doing (in this case possibly trying to get a 3 y/o into WDW for free) is wrong without resorting to all the venom that usually accompanies these types of threads. This poster is relatively new to the DIS, and with the search feature being disabled more often than not, it's possible that he/she came here seeking a genuine answer to a question that they couldn't find the answer to elsewhere. It's also possible that the original poster was planning on sneaking a 3 y/o into WDW and was looking for someone to say it is Ok to do so. In that case it is so easy to skip all the drama and simply say..."Hi. You shouldn't do it because (fill in the blank). Hope that answers your question". At least this thread didn't get as bad as some of the trainwrecks we have when questions like this are asked. JMHO, and I await your flames.

Excellent post, Grog!!

Welcome to the DIS, Crzy4mk! I hope you continue to post and ask whatever questions you might have! :)

We are taking our "just barely 3 year old" dd to WDW in July. This will be her fourth trip in 18 months and the first she has to have a ticket for. Did we think about it? Yes. Is it tempting to save $300 + meals? Yes. Is it wrong? Yes.

Another thing to think about is liability. If your child gets hurt at the park, and she has NO ticket, Disney will not be held liable. In fact, they might just sue you back! j/k?

Anyways, good luck with your decision. I personally feel that Disney should make the age of 4 the cutoff, since most kids at 4 years old are able and willing to ride the bigger rides, whereas the three year olds aren't. (My dd is 39.25 inches IN her sneakers... so she still misses that 40" mark!)

Have fun!

Karen

No flames..just the facts. Did you read her question? She wanted to know if she would be questioned. She said she knew the child was supposed to have a pass and wanted to know if others were questioned when they didn't pay (stole). She was asking if she would be caught cheating. Yep, it was a genuine question..but she knew that Disney charged for her child. I don't understand how a question like that could be asked and not expected to get the answers she got.

I actually resented all the innuendo about the soapbox and moral police, as if only those who agreed with her that it was OK, were suppose to answer.

IMO no one needs a search to know that this is cheating the system. All I had to do was read her post. She was looking for someone to tell her yeah or nay on whether she would be "caught". I have to admit, I'm not always nice when someone admits they want to cheat and put their child in the middle of it. It's the nature of the the beast..this kind of question, to get the answers posted. I don't think the moderator helped by the answers she posted, and then assumed the "moral police" people would be still, and only the ones who thought it was ok would answer.

Thank you Grog. I too feel you can give an answer without the drama or stories of them needing to then steal from Wal-Mart.

I actually did post at the begining with a suggestion (her trip was a long way off, perhaps she could have changed the date)...however, the moderator then made a comment that she forgot that "answer", which then led to people saying how they had no problem with doing it, and their stories about how they did it. Some of us happen to think it's stealing..if it be Disney or Walmarts, and felt just as stirred to answer. IMO the only answer that would appease you would be if we all said it was fine to do.

Beth--As a moderator you can certainly lock the thread after your somewhat comprehensive answer but otherwise I see no reason for those of us who disagree with the OP not to speak up.

The question had nothing to do with Disney rules only with getting caught. I didn't make the Wal-Mart analagy but it is valid. Theft of services is not much different than shop lifting.

People shop lift, people sneak children in BUT WHY IS OP posting asking for permissions (and implying that Disney is being unreasonable since the daugher is just a little over).

My dd will be 6 this summer and FINALLY hit the long awaited 40'' mark. We've been measuring almost on a daily basis. We went to the park quite a bit the last few years and purchased annual park passes for all of us, including for my peanut-sized daughter.

We purchased some passes when she was just 3 years old but were told by MANY cast members at WDW and Universal that we should not have purchased her a ticket as she was so small. We were questioned about her age frequently with plenty of unwelcomed advice that we shouldn't have bought a ticket for my dd. My experiences lead me to believe it would be quite easy for a guest to think they do not have to buy a ticket for their newly turned 3 year old. I'm encouarged to see so many wise, honest members here on these boards but I hope to bring a different experience to the mix.

The OP's question was whether or not you'd be questioned about the child's age. You MAY be questioned at the turnstiles and certainly will be questioned at the restaurants.

I hope this helps you decide. Welcome to the boards and enjoy your planning.

As I tried to say before you can have an opinion but you dont have to call someone a criminal or be melodramatic about it. A simple I dont think its right because the age is 3 would have been sufficient without insinuating she may as well shoplift from Walmart.

She wanted to know if she will be questioned. I will say most likely not at the parks.

What Beth was trying to do was stave off the usual commentary that comes along with this topic. It's not like we started moderating yesterday. If you want to comment on whether it is right or wrong, take it to the Debate Board. The OP was asking if it is possible and was trying to ascertain what may or may not be asked when they entered the gate.

I posted what I did as a means to keep this thread from deteriorating into what is has become, one riddled with sarcasm and personal attacks.
Both of these are against the DIS Guidelines for posting which everyone agreed to when registering to post on these boards.
It is time that this thread be closed.
