Paying balance on resort

Do you pay the balance on your resort upon check in or when you check out? We always have ours paid in full before we get there but this time we are traveling with friends and their reservation is under my name so they could get the AP rate. They won't be paying for theirs till we arrive at WDW.

Balance is due at check-in (if you booked with CRO) or 45 days in advance (if thru WDTC).

We pay with a credit card on arrival. There is a small amount placed on the card right at check in to see if the card is good, and then the full amount is placed on it when we check out. We have a vacation savings account at the bank and then when the credit card bill comes, we withdraw the money and pay off the card.
