Pay Pal Question???

My DD20 purchased tickets for a concert via a site similar to E-bay. She used Pay Pal to buy them. Long story short, tickets neve came. So, we filed a dispute with PP and they began an investigation. We paid $205. They have closed the case and reimbursed me $13.83?!?!? They said 'that was all they could obtain from the Sellers acct'. I am totally confused..I 'thought' one was protected against such issues when using PP to make the payment?

Anyone more knowledgable about the way it all works?

The "seller" must of cleaned out his account before someone else could.. Sorry for your DD's Loss... I think if it was through an Ebay auction it would of been covered.. Did this Ebay type place has warnings or anything about what is Insured and what isn't?? Oh and how did DD pay? If she did it by credit card Maybe she can dispute the Charge??

All that PayPal can recover is what is currently in that persons account. If she paid with a credit card she can dispute that way, but may have her PayPal account closed when it goes through. There is no real protection from a dishonest seller via PayPal.

The Paypal account is connected to my Visa account. This site is called 'Craigs List' not sure exactly what it is but the University kids seem to use it a lot and she has had only positive experiences until this.

Too bad there are such sleazy folks out there..

Yes Criagslist is a great site, but you are not buying from craig... There are just as many scammers there as there are on ebay.

To me Ebay works better because of the FEEDBACK, Craigslist anyone can post an item under any name so as persons that already got burnt may not remember them and warn potential victims.

I have had a couple of 'near scams' with E-bay myself of late so I am sworn off of it too. It's too bad..used to be great for hooking up people with what they want and Sellers with what they want to get rid of. Now that too is mostly dealers and many scammers. I guess they gravitate to anything and anyone that they feel is a fairly easy target.

Oh I still use craigslist(and ebay), but I always handle the exchange in person. I never send payment in advance because there is no way to protect yourself.

With Ebay I just make sure that the seller has tons of positive feedback.

Right...

With 1 'deal' that she did on Craigs List she did have dealings via phone with the Seller. It turned out great...I am not sure of all the details with this one though she is usually pretty savvy and has good instinct on sussing out the rats! This time not so much! I think she at one point hesitated going through with the purchase and the girl threatened to re-list the tickets so she fianlized it after all not wanting to lose them. I guess the Seller turned up the heat enough....

Oh well...sad, but a lesson learned

We've used Craig's List - it's a great resource to connect you with LOCAL people. The site states explicitly that you should NEVER deal with people outside your area because there are so many scams. It should be treated like the local newspaper: advertise, the person looks at the item; cash is exchanged.

I'm sorry for your daughter. That's such a bummer.

P.S. We put aunt's car on Craig's List at 8pm Saturday night. She got a call at 9:00pm. They sold it the next day. That was after spending months trying to sell it the conventional way (newspaper; trader magazine).

you have to be very careful with paypal, even as a seller
if the buyer decides they don't like it or they just want to be ******** and they have an AmEx they get at least one chargeback (I think thats the term) with no questions asked every calendar year.... then paypal wants their money back and you get lots of nasty phone calls, even if the buyer sends your stuff back to paypal instead of you (idk why) paypal wants you to buy it from them so you're out the same amount you sold it for to start

cant find the link but that happened to a guy that sold a really old apple stereo amp in mint condition...

How do you know if they are out of your area? I presume one would ask...but if they aren't truthful? Is a meeting always necessary?

I could have used my Amex as the CC for Paypal but sounds like that too would have been complcated. No easy answer I guess.
