patterns in english?

Ok so I open this pack of butternut (or somthing like that) patterns that were my grandmothers (think patterns costing ).50) and Im reading them... Well Yoke to me comes out of a egg, Basting is for a turkey, nap is somthing my students do, blind hem? hems can see? as you can guess im a beginer. Is there patterns writen without all this weird words? Mabey patterns that explain how you baiste fabric (im thinking of trying the turkey baster and water LOL)?

A yoke is a fitted part, usually around the neck that a gathered part is sewn onto. Like a nightgown that has the smooth top part, and then the fuller gathered part comes off of it. The smooth top part is the yoke.

Your patterns sound really cool. Those old ones have some funny measurments though. I would go more by the measurments listed, than the size, when you make your stuff...just a thought...

ah the upper chest peice!! Cool. I dont know this is a wanky pattern pack from buttnick that my great grandma paid 50 cents for. Its confusing in the least.

I just have to quote this for posterity, because it made me laugh a lot. I believe the patterns are from Butterick, but now it's always going to be buttnick to me. Hope the sewing is going well! It is like learning a foreign language.

Butterick still make patterns over here - they are the main company I think, the other one being Simplicity. You might find the have a website which can also help
