Pat Roberston stirring up a storm again

I don't think what he said was right, or that you would find too many people that think it is.

No, I think they want to say look at that crazy guy who calls himself a Christian.

However, there is no denying that he speaks for a great many people and has a loyal and dedicated following. He's not just a celebrity who publicly airs his political views:

In 1982, he was named Humanitarian of the Year by Food for the Hungry. In 1988 Robertson was named Man of the Year by Students for America and Christian Broadcaster of the Year by National Religious Broadcasters in 1989. In 1992, Robertson was selected by Newsweek magazine as one of America's 100 Cultural Elite. In recognition of his steadfast support for the nation of Israel, Robertson received the Defender of Israel Award in January 1994 from the Christians' Israel Public Action Campaign. In March 2000, Robertson received the prestigious Cross of Nails award for his vision, inspiration and humanitarian work with the Flying Hospital. The award was presented for the first time in the United States in more than 25 years. In July 2002, Robertson was presented with The State of Israel Friendship Award by the Chicago chapter of the Zionist Organization of America.

Robertson is past president of the prestigious Council on National Policy. In 1982 he served on President Ronald Reagan's Task Force on Victims of Crime. He is currently a member of the Board of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, and previously served on the Governor's Council of Economic Advisors in the State of Virginia.

He is the founder and chairman of CBN and there are millions who faithfully watch that network. To think that he's just a looney with no power is foolish and wishful thinking on both sides.

Pat done some good things certainly. BUT, at times (too many) his loosely hinged mouth has been a disservice to the USA and Christianity.

As a Christian myself, he's certainly off my list of people I'll listen to, let alone follow. I hope he apologies for his latest remarks, but I doubt he will.
:sad2:

:earseek:

Let's all hope that this might be the beginning of the end of the influence of Pat Robertson!!!!!

And, a HUGE Thank You to all of those here on the dis who have refrained from using this opportunity to climb on your soapbox and flame Christians or Christianity.

Unfortunately, with Pat Robertson making comments like this, the best thing to do might be to just give him enough rope and let him hang himself!!

edited to add: Bush personally may not be in a position where he wants to say much.... but, to all other Christians, and Christian organizations... Maybe it is time for us to step up to the plate, and let everyone know that we do NOT agree with such statements... And, yes, we do vote.

I think Pat Roberston is a bit more consequential for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that he made a point of becoming heavily involved in politics (not just expressing his opinions). He ran for President and garnered a decent amount of support. As such, I think it a little more noteworthy than Alec Baldwin's pontifications.

::yes::

as an aside, alec baldwin went to my alma mater before he transfered to nyu. at my alma mater, he majored in political science and ran for student government president and lost. :rotfl:

Well maybe JTyrrany has a point. AB and PR have something in common after all. They're both losers. (Uh...For president that is.)

What a shocking statement!

I don't think GWB needs to say much.

So you're telling all of Pat Robertsons followers that their spiritual leader is inconsequential? They might have a bone to pick with you about that. And I don't think Alec Baldwin has that many followers. He hasn't had a hit movie in a while.
Yep, I'm saying it. Do you truly, honestly think that the CIA is going to send assassins into Venezuela because Pat Robertson said so? If you do, then you are as delusional as he is.

When met with a problem I can't figure out, I always ask myself..."Who would Jesus Assassinate?"

I was just being sarcastic. I guess I must be losing my edge. :guilty: Yes, I am quite delusional on many things, but sorry, not about this. No sane person would actually believe Pat Robertson has a say in the operations of the CIA. I was merely pointing out the ire some of PR's followers would have regarding your statement about his lack of importance. That's all. No conspiracy.... :teeth:

what an outrageous statement from pat Robertson! I heard it today on Air America....and couldn't believe what I was hearing. Glad it also made the "mainstream" news!!

Who cares? He's just a guy on a TV show for cripes sake.

What Robertson says shouldn't make any more headlines than when Alec Baldwin went on Letterman and said that Henry Hyde and his family should be stoned to death.

Nobody was going to do what Baldwin said, and nobody is going to do what Robertson said, so it is inconsequential.

Quite franky, it's just being made into a big deal because of those who want to say "oh, look at those crazy Christians". The fact is that he does not speak all that many Christians.

No, I think what people are trying to say "look at that crazy man that thinks he represents christians!"
As for Alec Baldwin....ummm....he's an actor and while they are allowed their opinion, I think that someone that claims to be a christian and a so-called 'leader" of christians saying such a preposterous statment IS a big deal!

BWAAAAA!!

What I hate most is that every time they mention it, the news seems to want to point out that he is in Virginia Beach!! Oy Vey! couldn't they say Norfolk or something????? :rotfl:

While they don't want to claim him, there are an awful lot of people on the Christian right who embrace him as a man of God.

I, for one, have never supported PR and never will.
I occasionally watch his supported programs for news
and if a Christian artist I like is on, but that's it.
I do not support, and do not follow, any televangelist.
In fact, I have sent emails to the contact address of CBN,
saying my piece about PR's opinions in the past,
and I will be doing the same thing regarding
his horrendous statement this week.

I have NO idea who this Chavez guy is....I thought he was talking about Cesar Chavez, the guy in Cuba, but isn't he dead? I'm definitely NOT a history person...

I was watching the 700 Club one day for the heck of it, and it's such a strange, random show LOL.

I guess I'd better get on the record: Pat Robertson said a terrible, ungracious thing that should never have been said, especially by someone who is a spiritual leader.

Footnote: Chavez does seem to be a nut, but how in the world does someone who is a disciple of Jesus Christ call for a CIA whack job on anyone :confused3 Ya blew it this time, Pat. Time to retire.

What a kook!!! Always thought he was too.

But to suggest that our gov't. forces "take him out?"

I dunno... I believe in free speech as much as the next person, but this is so borderline to yelling "fire!" in a crowded theatre. Unfortunately, PR still has a large following and that is what frightens me. Some of those people may not be able to easily recognize the lunatic statements this fellow makes.

That would be a hope. I do hope that whoever decides to take Chavez out, takes good old Fidel right along with him. We can all feign horrified shock and then celebrate. It wouldn't break my heart. We could attribute it to a "nutty follower". Sounds like a plan to me!
