My Sons passport has less than 6 months to run (5 months left during holiday) will we have to renew it before we leave?

Depends who you are flying with.
The rules for US immigration are you can enter as long as your passport is valid under the visa waiver program.
Virgin same rules.
Other airlines could be different

This is taken from US customs and Immigration website, UK is signed up so we do not need 6 months validity.

As a general rule, passports must be valid for six months beyond the date the traveler will exit the U.S., however, the U.S. has signed agreements with a number of countries to waive this requirement. When such an agreement is in place, the passport must be valid for the entire period of the visitor's intended stay, but the additional six month validity period is not required

You can ring Virgin but you will probably get someone in India that has no idea what they are talking about. A big problem with Virgin.

You also have the option of renewing passport early.
Upto 9 months from old passport can be added to a new one so you don't lose anything by renewing early.

When you should apply
You do not have to wait until your old passport expires to apply to renew it. If there is any time left on your old passport, IPS will add it to your new passport, up to maximum of nine months. You can renew your passport whenever you wish
