passports question

Do we need passports for our kids , 10, 11 and 12? We have heard both yes and no we are flying.

Driving-Jan 09 I believe. I got a Nexus pass so I can leave it at home though.

Info on kids is down at the bottom. According to this, kids 15-18 driving over the border are okay with just birth certificates till May 31 09. Then, they'll need one of the approved documents (passport is easiest). Kids under 15 will still be able to enter by land with a birth certificate only.

We drive into the US quite regularly, daughter and her boyfriend were just there on Sunday, you only need a passport for flying at this point. A birth certificate and drivers license or provincial id are all you require for driving right now, for under 18 it's just the birth certificate just like Northstar said. It is no hassle whatsoever not having a passport at this time. We have never had any trouble what so ever. When you consider the cost involved in getting a passport, especially for a whole family, and the fact they are only good for 5 years then you need to pay to renew them again, why would you get them now if you have no plans to fly anywhere? Just means you will be paying more money to renew them again before you have to.... The date for the change is May 31, but that may get pushed back again, they have pushed it back twice now. We are waiting until much closer to that date to see what they plan before we rush to spend the money. We are driving down again leaving here on December 30....
