Passports...kids?

I am sure this is somewhere here, but I can't find it. We are looking into passports (since we will need them come June). We have a 3 and 4 year old. Do they only need their Birth certificates? We are flying domestically in the US.
Also, what about my (then will be) 15 yr old sister?

Oh, also, you used to need a 'professional' be your guarantor (if that is the right term). From what I can make out, you only need someone who has had a passport for 2 yrs? And is a citizen and of age...yes, but thats it? Thats easy enough!!

Everyone needs a passport now - even newborns. Before one used to be able to add their children to their own passport but now everyone needs their own.
And yes, they have made signing easier at least. No more need for a notary!

Children's passports are less expensive too....I don't remember exactly, but I was pleasantly surprised when she gave me the total....I'm thinking it was around $59 for the kids?

I used just their birth certificates. I THINK I recall reading on them that your 15 yr old would have to sign hers (Thinking it was over 12?), but otherwise it's the same as any other childs....

Two caveats...make sure their pictures are as sharp as they can be, with absolutely NO shadows....my girls's first pics were rejected. One dd they claimed was unnaturally pale (well, bucko, she's of scots descent, and it's January in CANADA! ), and the other one had a TINY shadow behind her shoulder....turns out some burgundy shirts and some shades of blue reflect funny in the passport lighting.

Intresting, I am quite pale most of the year, and had my photo done wearing a baby blue shirt, and I look incredibly tanned in the photo...kinda weird.

I got one for my son last year, it is cheaper, but its also smaller and has to be renewed sooner, i think every two years

Yea, my 2 year olds was 20 something and my other 2 who are 6 and 8 were 30 something. It worked out that I paid the same for 3 kids as I did for my own. (Our 4 passports came to 189.00)

To save you a hastle, most cheapie places like Costco, the Superstore, WalMart won't do pics for kids under 5 - so I paid more for my sons pic than I did for myself and 2 kids at Costco!!

And you don't need a notary public - just anybody who owns a passport for 2 years and who has known you for at least 2 years.

you might need the long form birth certificate for your children if you were married after the child was born.

Shopper's Drug Mart does everyone. I saw them do a two week old baby when I was there one week.

They charge $9.99, and retakes if it's rejected are free.

When I took my brother and sister across the border they needed their passports and I also had a letter that was signed by my parents and I believe a notary public to give me permission. I had been told different things about needing the letter and it being notarized but I had it done so we didn't get held up at the border.

Wow! Thanks guys! That's a big help!!! I didnt know that SUperstore wouldn't do my kids photos. ANd you talk of shoppers, I didn't know they took photos! I will have to call around.
I had to laugh at the paleness from being a Scot... Maiden name MacBeath, married McIntosh. My kids don't stand a chance of NOT being pale especially this time of year. We are as white as can be!! My mother keeps saying, you look pale, are you getting sick? No Mom, thanks for my genes! lol
Well, I suppose I should start on the applications, I picked some up yesterday.

Do it online. SO EASY. You can get ANYONE with a Canadian passport to sign your application forms.

To fly you HAVE to have passports. Really makes life easier.

I keep everyone's passports in my hands until needed and life is good!

If you do your application online you will get through the passport office a little faster. The online system will not allow you make an error and then print it out. So, when you take that into the office they know that it's correct and you can bypass the first screening line.

The first two links are the online application forms (first for a child, second for an adult). As others have said, filling out the forms online will save you a significant amount of time and hassle.

My Mother's friend actually suggested Blacks (photography store). I will be calling around next week to see how much multiple places costs, and if they will do kids under 5. What a hassle these things are, but I totally understand why we need them. Now, why don't we make the Americans get them? I wonder if this will affect American Tourism...if there wont be as many of us Canadians going down past the border.

I double-checked and they're just shutting down the old online html version of the adult application form. The links I put in will still be valid past March 31

We are driving across the border then flying from Detroit, my understanding is we don't require passports for this, just id?

Sorry, no. You will need passports for land or water crossings effective June 1, 2009 (you already need passports for air crossings into the US).
