Are passports being upgraded Jan. 1 '07 or were they in '06? I think I remember something about a readable chip being implanted in the documents for scanable ID but don't know if they are already being processed that way. The kids all need new ones and I will wait for the upgrade if it comes in Jan. '07.

I just got my new passport yesterday and it doesn't appear to have a chip in it anyplace. I would assume you would be able to feel something but maybe not.

Thanks fo rthe link. I found it a Q & A online section. The new passports with chips started shipping on Aug. 14th this year.

Golfgal, how long did it take to get yyour new passpost. DH has heard it is currently taking longer than usual.

I got a new one for DS last Aug and renewed ours. He got the chip one and ours was the old paper.

DS new one took less than 2 weeks. Ours took 4 or 5 weeks to process.

It took a month. I don't know if the process was slowed some because we did the passport process stuff at DS14's school for their upcoming trip to China so there were about 100+ people getting passports that day. DH got a passport last winter, paid the extra to get it sent faster and it came in 3 weeks, waste of money!
