I have been reading a bit and some people have mentioned the Passporter. I looked it up, as much as Icould find, trying to determine if this is one of those..."must haves" or "not necessary" items.

As a NEWBIE to cruises in general, never been on one. Is this something that I would benefit from or is just nice information?

Thanks

I like the passporter but I also find just as great info right here at this site. Also wdig.com and dcltribute have good info. There's another I'll pm you because we can't post the name here.

I am newbie too (and wil be longer than you as my counter still in 500's)
It is a "must have" in my book
There ship is just soooo big and there is so much to do - I rather have a plan rather than to be overwelmed

The Passporter is great! While it cotains information you can get online, it is a lot easier (and cheaper) while on board to use the book. Very well organized. Jennifer and Dave do a great job. I highly recommend it!

I think it's a must have. In addition to ship info, they have info on the ports and reviews of the excursions. Their info saved me a lot of headaches and even though I work with computers, I still like to be able to grab a book and look something up. Also, it's so convenient to stick in your carry-on to review on the plane and have for the inevitable "I can't remember what I read about..." when you're on the ship.

There actually are some people who don't go on line daily for all of their entertainment and information. Who knew?! And I am even married to one (its a mixed marriage, I'm DIS and she isn't).

So DW enjoys reading the book and I am on-line. And the point about being able to carry it on board the ship for reference is well taken.

I just recieved my Passporter in the mail on Friday, and read the entire thiing that day and am working my way through it again. I think it is a must have, especially for first time cruisers (like me). They have great advice and reviews of the restaurants, lots of wonderful information to help you plan your cruise. They are taking pre-orders for the 2005 addition coming out in January. I am going to order that one also. I would order it. They also have great worksheets that I know I will work and re-work, and re-work!!

a must have, we just did our first cruise and i would have missed out lots without it, have a great time

I purchased the Passporter for our cruise in May. Even though this was our second Disney cruise & we had read & reread these boards, I found that the Passporter was a great guide to have with us. Lots of tips and reminders at our fingertipswhile on board.
After buying and reading the cruise pasporter, we ordered the WDW pasporter for our pre-cruise trip. This was also a great book to have.
Enjoy your trip!

Many, many people cruise without the Passporter (or these boards) and have a wonderful time - even first time cruisers. It isn't difficult to do. Read the documents you get a few weeks before you cruise. Show up on the ship. Read your Navigators. Have a great time.

However, the Passporter added months worth of enjoyment to my cruise - pre and post cruise. And having information ahead of time did help me be prepared for what I would find on the ship.

We bought the cruise Passporter and the WDW Passporter as soon as we booked our first cruise. We thought it was an excellent resource and took it everywhere with us, including our trip. Dh & dd weren't ones to check info on the internet. That became my job and I found this wonderful board.

I also vote for getting the Passporter. We are also planning our first cruise and have found the book very informative. The best thing about the Passporter is it can go with me while I'm waiting to pick up the DS's at different activities or when I have to stand in line somewhere. I can look through it and daydream or plan while waiting.
Have Fun!

Thanks for all your help and advice.

I went on line and noticed that there is a regular version and a DELUXE version.

My guess is the Deluxe has more detailed information, but is there a benefit of one over the other?

There will also be a new 2005 version available in Feb. Will wait for that one since my trip isn't until July 2005.

Thanks again

I have found the Passporter to be very helpful. I do not have the Deluxe version of the cruise version however I have used it for years in the WDW passporter. The difference is how you use the book and style. The Deluxe passporter versions are a six ring binders type of book (not the size of a standard 3 ring binder so don't worry) with a unique passpocket system, so you can remove the sections that do not apply if you like and when the book is updated you may just order the new sections or new passpockets. The Regular DCL Passporter is a paperback book (the WDW one is a hardcover spiral book). The information within them is not different. You do not get more info about DCL in the Deluxe book over the other. Instead you get more notes/storage tools in the form of the passpockets.

I love my Passporter so much that I have just ordered the one for WDW even though have been 4 other times. It has become my "bible" and love DIS also, my DH thinks I am nuts, but have gotten great info from here and the Passporter. Including calling WDW at 4:00am (I'm in CA) to get our PS, have one more morning and have gotten everything we wanted. I'm very tired, but know my DD 4 1/2 princess: will appreciate my hard work when she gets to meet all her favorites.:Pinkbounc

After visiting WDW for thirty years I ordered my first Guide Book from PassPorter Loved it, when I made my first DCL reservation the first thing I did was to order The Field Guide to The Disney Cruise Line it's like having all the great advise with you without being online. I love the Deluxe because I can add to the book with my personal favorites or "Things I must do list."

I'm the type of person who has to research things to death before I do them, so buying the Passporter was a requirement for me! Loved it and even had DH check it out. He usually doesn't need to read up on everything as I do, but I think you'll appreciate having the Passporter with you when you cruise.

If I read my college text books as well as I do this....

I'd be president! Well, maybe something that requires more education anyway! :jester:
