I was wondering if anyone has applied for a birth certificate and than a passport recently? I am due the end of July and we have our trip booked the middle of Sept. I'm not sure if that is going to give us enough time to get all the paperwork in place for our newest addition. I would hate to miss out on our free dining window so I'm not sure if I should phone and try and change our reservation to the last day we can and hope for the best.

I would suspect that it depends on which province you live in - my advice would be to go to the nearest Provincial Vital Statistics office asap after baby is born and apply for the birth certificate (congratulations by the way!) and once the bc is in, go straight to the federal office to apply for the passport.

My son's girfriend had to get her birth certificate as she had laminated hers so they would not accept for passport- and we did it all online and I was amazed how fast it came- within a week or so......it says on the website how fast they guarantee......not sure if it takes longer for when you have just had the baby or not. We are in Ontario- so check out http://www.ontario.ca/en/residents/ONT06_019042 it says they guarantee within 15 days- each province maybe different - can do faster if pay more. Her passport was then pretty quick too-she went in person to passport office then it was within 2- 3 weeks after she got it.

Funny formill, I have just had the exact same problem. Only my husbands BC was returned because it was damaged, couldn't read the first letter of his name. I sent it out on Jan 18th, got it returned Jan 29th. He had to wait to apply because he had to renew his liscence on Jan 4th, and we were told there would be plenty of time from passport canada. So I paid the extra $30 for express on the birth certificate for a total of $65. I did that on Friday afternoon, and just received it this afternoon.
Now we are flying on March 6th. We live 6 hours to the closest passport office which I beleive is Brampton. If I mail it in, I am taking the chance of it not being back in time. If I go to the office, from what I am reading Brampton doesn't do urgent, the only do express 2-9 days. I don't want to have to go back down to pick it up. The do urgent in downtown TO but you have to show proof that you are going to be crossing border within 10 days. I don't want to drive 6 hours and then in 10 days have to drive back down to catch our flights in Buffalo.
Anyone have any, any advice on what would be the best thing for me to do?
Thanks in advance

I found out the birth certificate and passport are both pretty quick. It will all just depend on how quick they can process the birth registration. Once that is processed they will process and send out the birth certificate which can take up to four months:confused3.

Are you flying out of Canada or the US? If the US, you just need a birth certificate for your baby from what I understand. Kids under the age of 16 don't need a passport. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

My mom had to get a new birth certificate & it took 4 days (We're in Ontario). We did it online, paid my credit card on a Monday & she had it by Thurs. Passport is about 2 weeks from date of application if you go to the passport office.

The problem will be with the birth registration. For some reasons some communities push them through pretty quick, others take awhile to be registered. I have no idea why. You should contact your local MP for assistance in obtaining your documents in a timely fashion. He/She might have some sugguestions or advise for you.

Good luck here is some pixie dust for you pixiedust:

Forgot about the birth registration process. My son (born in 2006) took quite a while to get processed. Can't remember how long though, but back then you couldn't apply online for his birth certificate but he was born in April & we went to Florida in Nov & I know I had his birth certificate way in advance before Nov. I think you can now apply for a birth certificate before the birth registration is complete. I know my GF did this with her 2nd son.

Yes - my baby was born July 29th... I applied for birth certificate on August 24th. UPS didn't like my address, so despite their 5 days guarantee, it took me 3 months to get the birth certificate straightened out (I had to fax a different mailing address back to the registry and request and request them to re-issue).

Passport was a different issue. If you were both born in Canada, your baby will have no problem and you can pay for it to be expedited (like I did with my personal one). If you're brown skinned and your baby's father was born in Pakistan, it will require a trip to your MP's office after being turned away at the Passport office without the long form birth certificate (statement of live birth) and many harassing phone calls. It took me a month to get my daughter's passport.

I hope the best for you though!!!

Passport Canada told me I needed my sons long form of his birth certificate (as we are common-law not married) so I applied on-line on Feb 22 and it said it would be 10 business days plus mail time. I don't have it yet but I am assuming it will be here before March Break (Mar17th) when we plan on going to the passport office.

Here in Ontario the registration process takes about 4 weeks. I'm not sure if you can now do it online. If that is an option it would speed up the process.

See if you can 1...delay your trip a little and 2...try to get the registration forms ahead of time so that you can fill in as much as possible before the birth and then finish it and get it sent out the day of.

Also remember that baby can arrive as much as 14 days overdue. So factor that into the equation.

When my son was born 4 1/2 years ago - the registration process took about 3 weeks, birth certificate took 10 days and passport took 1 week. I did go in person to the Calgary Passport office - we flew to Dominican when he was 2 months old. I would think that if you give 2 months between birth and flight, you should not have any problems.:wizard:
