Passport renewal ?

I asked on the Transportation Borad as well, but thought someone here might know as well. When you renew your passport, do they cancel the old one and return it to you?

I believe they punch a hole all the way through it and return it. But that may have changed.

I renewed my passport last year and they punched a hole through the old one and returned it to me.

Thanks, I can't remember, and can't find my original one if I have it. The one I am renewing is a renewal from a decade ago.

Just confirming they do still punch them and return them. The kids just got new passports in November so at least as recently as that we got them back. They do mail the old one back in a seperate envelope and ours came about 3 days after the new passports arrived.
