Hello newbie here and I have a silly question. Both my husband and I have enhanced licenses which allows us to cross boarders by land or by sea but we do not have passports right now. My 11 year old son doesn’t have any type of passport yet. Do you think we would need to get passports for our Halloween on the High Seas Cruise in October (if it happens) or would we be ok with our enhanced licenses and birth certificates? We are only going to Nassau and Castaway Cay. Thanks!!

While many people do cruise without passports, you are technically travelling internationally. I would never risk international travel without a passport, there are so many unknowns. Anything from the simple act of missing being back on the ship ontime, to being run over in the street or falling down a stairs, and you are in a foreign country without a passport. You have the time, just get the passports and then you wont have that stress.

Do not travel outside of the US with a passport -even if you don't think you will need it - there is always that terrible emergency where you will need to fly home from somewhere - get a passport - PLEASE

Disney may require you to have a passport (you and your husband) even if your licenses would technically suffice - since it looks like they work anywhere in the Caribbean/Mexico.

an enhanced driver's licence can only be used as a substitute for a passport for travel between the US and Canada by land or by ferry crossings, other international travel would require a passport.

Plus, having a passport makes it much easier to return to the US, if something happens. Trying to prove you are a US citizen without one when a lockdown, due to a pandemic or a terrorist attack occurs, can be difficult, unless you happen to carry an official birth certificate. Even then, I think those would be scrutinized more than a passport.

It's always better to have a passport in case of medical emergency. Once it's done, you have them for years and renewal is simple... You can use them as an extra ID when not travelling.

Plus, once you have that, you can travel all around the world easily. :)

You never know what's going to happen when you travel abroad, so why put your family at risk? Get passports. A little bit of paperwork & a fee, and then you'll be set to travel internationally for 10 years (child for 5 years), and as passports are the gold standard of ID, they're useful domestically, too.

While I believe the enhanced license can get you into and out of the United States through a port, I do not believe you can get back into the US via airport with them (unless this has changed very recently). Given air may be the best method of return in event of an emergency it seems like a passport would be worthwhile.

So as others have said a passport is best. However, not all the statements about what is required are correct. If the cruise is a closed loop, meaning it starts and ends in the same US port, only a birth certificate is actually required. If it's a one way cruise with a different start and ending port then a passport is required. Based on your other ports, it sounds like you're on one of the dcl closed loop cruises so you could get away without a passport if you choose to take the risk.

I always travel with a passport. On another note, especially for your 11 year old. A passport is the gold standard for identification. As he progresses in school and plays sports, or when he gets a driver's license, the passport makes an easy proof of age and identification document.

ESPECIALLY now I would not set a toe on a cruise ship without a passport.
This.

Get the passports. You don’t wanna be stuck in a foreign country that may not have the medical care you are used to and the inability to fly back to America.

Also I’m a big advocate of having a passport in general because should the opportunity for international travel arise, particularly at the last minute or through work or some other unexpected avenue, you can jump on it right away.

Agree that even in ordinary times, it was good sense to have a passport. In Covid-19 times, it is just insane not to have it. Nobody know what will happen when cruising resumes, but having the ability to fly home from Nassau is just a common sense precaution.
