passport name question?

I'm applying for a passport (first time). Should I use my full middle name or just the initial. My birth certificate has my full middle name and so does my social security card. My drivers license only has my middle initial. The full middle name is not required on the passport application. Any thoughts?

And another issue. My husband does not have a middle name on his birth certificate or social security card but on his license he does have his middle initial. Should he put his middle name on the passport (or initial) or should he leave the middle name blank?

Yeah I don't understand why he suddenly has a middle name. I guess some times with catholics they don't give you a middle name at birth then when you make your confirmation in the church you choose a name and they use it as their middle name. I'm catholic and I still don't understand it! His brother and sister also don't have middle names on their birth certificates but now use their confirmation name.

Whatever you decide to put on the passport, MAKE SURE THE PLANE TICKET IS THE SAME AS THE PASSPORT.

I use my baptismal name as my middle name. I don't have a middle name on my birth certificate.

oh good I'm glad to hear other people do this. I thought it might just be my husbands family!

To be safe I'd make sure my birth certificate, passport, driver's license, and plane ticket all had the same name. That is what I did because I figured it was to option that could cause me the least amount of issues.

This is what we do and we use our full names so we don't have to think about it. It gets confusing trying to remember because my B/C has my maiden name (obviously) and my husband goes by his middle name and hates his first name.

My social security card and passport both have my first, middle, and last name. My drivers license only uses my middle initial; that's just what the lady at the DMV did. *shrug*

I wasn't given a middle name when I was born, either. (not Catholic, just how my mom did it) In elementary school I wanted one, chose one, and that's what was submitted to SS when it was time for me to get a SS card (in the 70s you didn't get one 2 minutes after you're born like it is today).

It's different now, but middle names used to be totally OK to start using, legally, just because you've been using it.


My bc just as First Last, SS has First Middle Last, Driver's license has the 3. Got my first passport in '95 and that combo was TOTALLY fine. I've since renewed it without a problem.

So while kids now can't really just change around middle names and have it be OK, I'm sure the passport people have seen it repeatedly and will understand what went on.



(my related problem is I don't like the middle name anymore, and in order to change it I'd need to jump through hoops, first fully changing it TO what's on my DL, then changing it to what I want...)

You should use your full legal name as it appears on your birth certificate.

Not if you are married and adopted your husband's name.

Use whatever the form asks for. Does it say full middle name? I thought it did. If is says MI, use the initial. If it says Middle Name, use that. You won't be traveling with your birth certificate. Give them what they specifically ask for. The passport is the gold standard for id.

My passport has Debra Ann B*. I had no problem when I went to India 2 years ago and my plane ticket said Debra A B*, actually it printed out as Debraa B*.

I was told to use whatever is listed on my birth certificate, since I had to send a copy of the BC to the passport agency...
