I have checked this 1000 times but I'm still paranoid hence this post.

We are travelling May 31st to June 5th. My son's passport expires July 17 2017. I read that Canada (as well as other countries) is only required to have passports valid for their period of stay and is exempt from the 6 month rule.

Can anyone verify?

Thanks in advance!

On Monday I crossed the border to drop my daughter at Buffalo airport. My passport expire in July but no problem what so ever :)

All of our passports were going to expire within 2 months of our planned trip December 2015 but since we travel a lot, I just decided to renew them a few months early. Like you, I was informed that the 6 month rule does not apply to Canadians but I didn't want to risk it especially since we would have had to renew a few months later anyway.

We had to get dd a passport 5 months before expiry for a Carribbean cruise this past Christmas. Only one of the islands demanded 6 months be open (not the States or the other islands) but we had to do it.

Which annoys the heck out of me by the way .... I find passports expensive to begin with and then you don't even get the full term out of them if you travel some places.

Yeah, we did ours 6 months early just to be sure were weren't going to be turned back from our cruise. It sucks, because now my youngest will need a new children's passport at 17 instead of being able to get an adult one at 18.

Adult passports are issued to those 16 years of age or over, so "no problem"!

My husband is out of the country right now. When he gets back I will apply for a new one for my son. I just hope it will be ready before we go. I won't pay for an express one. I checked with Air Canada and they are okay with it and all the documents I've read said it's okay. Last minute trip problems! LOL

He will have to surrender his old passport when you apply for the new one so unless you have a guarantee from the passport office that it will be back in time I would wait until after your trip. If you can take everything to a passport office the turn-a-round is pretty quick (a week or so). This depends on where you are in the country of course.

Not a problem. I squeezed a trip to visit my sister in San Francisco on June 2016, my passport expired in July 2016. Same in March when we went to Disney World DD's passport expires in June 2017, and it was fine to use in March 2017. The only thing is you have to see an actual border agent, the machines won't work. Added an extra 5 minutes to our customs clearing.
