I just found out today that the cost of obtaining a passport has increased to $85.00!!! Yuck!!
I was wondering if we'll need passports for next years trip and actually emailed the government website this afternoon, and asked. DH has his birth certificate and driver's licence and I don't drive but have my new Health Card (updated photo) and my birth certificate and I hate the thought of having to fork out another $170.00 on top of plane fares etc. I received an answer within an hour saying:
"Thank you for your enquiry. The documents you have will suffice. The
following text is what we are telling Canadians travelling to the U.S.:
"A valid Canadian passport should be carried for all visits outside Canada.
The passport should be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your
expected return to Canada. However, for travel to the United States, you
are only required to be in possession of valid photo identification and
proof of citizenship."
So I think we might be ok with this. We'll most likely be going via Buffalo airport next year and are planning a day trip this year across the border so we'll be crossing with only these documents and then we'll see what happens.
Just wanted to make sure you all knew about the increase!
