Party of 3 on the DDP - April 2012 *Updated 5/15: CHH and Final Thoughts*

Wow! Citricos looks and sounds amazing! I just love reading reviews like this where the writer has such a fantastic experience. I also really appreciate when a server is honest with me. It really goes a long way in my opinion! Glad to hear you loved it so much.

Wow, your dinner at Citricos looks and sounds amazing. Love your DH's rationalisation of their use of citrus :rotfl:

Your Citricos experience sounds amazing. That halibut--oh my gosh, I wish I had some.

A random comment, but it seems like I've never seen a Citrico's review with bad pictures. It always seems like the lighting is perfect. Do they have a team of people with box lights who run over whenever they see guests photographing their food? :lmao:

I kid, I kid. Your photos are great though.

I agree the shrimp appetizer there is amazing!

So good!

O-M-G! I can not wait for dinner at Citricos!!!

Oh, now I can't wait for Citricos!

You are both in for a treat! Enjoy it!

Oh I do hope the Halibut is on the menu in a couple of weeks time

It looks delicious :cloud9:

I hope you get to try it!

Citricos is one of our faves!:thumbsup2

It is one of my faves now too!

Late joining, great reviews so far. That strawberry shortcake looked delicious as did Ohana's and your halibut at Citrcos.

Can't wait to read more.

Thank you for reading!

I REALLY want to eat there!!! Love your review!! Can't wait for your next one!

Thank you - I'm working on the next installment.

He was a really great waiter. Some have the "technical" side down but aren't too personable or vice versa but he was a nice combo of both.

Funny about the citrus - I'd never thought about it before!

It's funny that you say that about the lighting because as I started taking pictures I said to my DH that I love the lighting in there it was perfect for food photos. :)

Getting caught up on your review. I really want to try Ohana! I really think my DH would enjoy it, he loves Potstickers and Wings. I am not a huge fan of Bread Pudding but I LOVE caramel so I will probably like it.

Too Bad about your table location for Tusker House, I would love to try some of the TS breakfasts, I will have to look into it for next trip.I really would love to try that juice that they have at a couple places, it seems similar, not sure if it is the same or not- the ones at Ohana, Boma and Tusker.

LOVE Flame Tree! I have been into pulled pork lately and it really looks good there, but when we were there the last 2 times, I had the BBQ chicken salad and that is really good. It was just sooo hot the days we were there both trips that I really just wanted something cold like a salad and it was so refreshing.

I had so many de je vu moments with your Citricos review! Like you, they lost our dining reservation after we watched everyone who came after us being seated..... glad to know if wasn't something I said! :confused3 I've ordered the shrimp appetizer (Yum) and the lemon cheesecake (I thought that perhaps by now the wait staff had forgotten that I licked the plate for that one!) I hope you didn't try to eat the chewey garnish thingie - I made that mistake and it was like super Aba Zabba on my teeth. Thanks for sharing your Citricos review! :goodvibes

Oh and Flame Tree BBQ - I am in awe that you could split the pork sandwich. I don't share that sucker for nothing! ::yes::

You should definitely give 'Ohana a try! DH is trying to recreate the Tusker House/Ohana juice for Mother's Day brunch today. I'll report back!

I'm just glad that we got a good table at Citricos inspite of the temporary loss of our reservation! I have a little bit of a complex that I have "give me the worst table in the house" stamped on my head when we go to Disney (long history of getting undesirable tables:rolleyes2).

Wow! I love your reviews. Thanks for taking the time to share.:thumbsup2

Thank you for reading!

Sorry for the delay getting back to my reviews. I'd gotten an email from PhotoBucket that I was about to be put into "time out" so I had to wait for my bandwidth to reset so my pictures wouldn't temporarily go MIA. I'll be back soon with our last full day , including lunch at Coral Reef.:goodvibes

We started off our last full day with breakfast from Gasparilla’s. DH was so kind as to bring it to us in the room so DD and I could get a few extra zzzzzzs. We used snack credits for oj, a yogurt parfait and a chocolate twist and then paid OOP for some cereal and milk.

IMG_9687.jpg

IMG_9686.jpg

I thought the chocolate twist was going to be like a chocolate croissant but it seemed to have some sort of pastry cream (although more gelatinous) in it. It was good (hey, chocolate and pastry, how can we go wrong?;)) but I prefer a traditional chocolate croissant.

We headed to Epcot for the day since our final TS ADR was for lunch at Coral Reef. I have to admit, I wasn’t too jazzed for this ADR but DD realllllllly wanted to eat at the restaurant “with the tank” so I’d made this specifically for her. As often happens to me on the last day of the trip, I start getting crazed about all the things we *didn’t* do or eat, so around noontime I pulled out my iPhone and started searching for lunch ressies to see if we could switch to a different restaurant. We were in the Mexico pavilion at the time and that gave me a craving for Mexican food. Turns out there were lots of openings at almost all the WS restaurants (I think Le Cellier and Via Napoli were the only ones not available) but DD gave me the pouty face at the thought of missing Coral Reef so I soldiered on.

IMG_9725.jpg

I loved the seahorse door pulls.

IMG_9763.jpg

Our ADR was for 1:05 and we checked in just a few minutes early. Other than the mix-up at Citricos, this was the first place all week that we weren’t buzzed right at our ADR time. It was almost 1:20 p.m. by the time we got seated. Our table was on the upper-most level, but the row against the railing (so we were the second to the last row of tables). We were all the way to the right-side of the tank, maybe about two tables in from the kitchen door. Honestly, not really a great seat. The saving grace was there was a dip in the wavy pattern of the wall divider on one side of our table so at least DD could see over that.

IMG_9740.jpg

It took a little bit for our waitress to come over and she was a bit…odd. Can’t pinpoint exactly what it was about her, she was just sort of uncomfortable. I had already studied the menu quite a bit in the waiting area and asked her if the lobster dish was basically lobster mac and cheese. She answered, “sort of” in a weirdly coy way and walked off. Um, okay?:confused3

She came back a while later to drop off our drink and some rolls, as well as to take our orders.

IMG_9749.jpg

It took quite some time for our entrees to come out. Our server came over once to say they should be right out. Then she disappeared and we waited some more. At one point she was mulling through our section, looked at our table, then bee lined to the kitchen. So I’m not sure if there was a mix up or she forgot us or what, but finally around 1:55 p.m. our food arrived.

DD had the kids’ pizza and apple slices:

IMG_9751.jpg

DH had the mahi-mahi with shrimp and coconut lime sauce:

IMG_9750.jpg

And I had the lobster orechiette, which indeed was exactly like lobster mac and cheese:rotfl::

IMG_9753.jpg

You can’t really tell from the picture but there was quite a bit of lobster underneath that pasta. I’d say at least six claws, which was heaven to me because the claws are my favorite part of a lobster:goodvibes. The sauce was kind of heavy and sort of like a Velveeta-type mac and cheese sauce. It couldn’t have been too bad though because I ate the whole thing:lmao:. DH said his entrée was, “okay” but after the excellent seafood we’d had the night before I think anything was bound to be a bit of a letdown.

For dessert I’d been wanting to try the chocolate wave, after reading so much about it here on the Dis.

IMG_9761.jpg

I have to say I was underwhelmed by this dessert. I guess I didn’t read the description carefully but I was expecting something more creative and to me it was a run-of-the mill molten cake.

DH got the sugar-free cheesecake with berries and wasn’t a fan:

IMG_9760.jpg

DD had the Coral Reef brownie. We were both charmed by the Nemo chocolate on top and she loved this dessert. One of the better kids’ desserts she had all week::yes::.

IMG_9757.jpg

All in all, this was my least favorite TS of the week. The food was average at best and the service was lackluster. Even DD, who had been so wanting to eat here, wasn’t as enthralled with the atmosphere as we thought she would (maybe it would’ve been different if we’d been closer to the tank). The last time we ate here was in 1999 and I don’t think it’s someplace we’d return to anytime soon.

Cost OOP for this meal would’ve been $88.

Yep, Coral Reef was about the same experience for us.... a great view of the tank of fish with un-appealing food. I would return again since my DH has never been just so he can enjoy the ambiance but it is not on my must do list. Last time we sat up in the top tier as well and I enjoyed the more expansive view compared to when we were right next to the tank.

What a shame about your table, after your DD was so excited to eat with the fishes. I absolutely love the white choc Nemo decoration on top of her brownie sundae (in fact, is it wrong that I think that looks to be the most appetising dish of the review) ;)

I think it's a good place to experience once. If DD wants to go back at some point I might just do apps.

Hehe, I agree about the brownie dessert being one of the highlights of the meal!

I think we had the same table you described at the Coral Reef! Ugh!:faint:

Yeah, not a great table at all. Sorry you had the same!

We decided to spend our last evening at Magic Kingdom. It was after 8:30 p.m. before any of us starting feeling hungry for dinner. And it was one of those hungries where nothing in particular sounds appealing (hate that). We decided on Pinocchio’s since we were right there and it was one of the eateries that was open until 10 p.m. that night. Plus DD loves it when we get a table overlooking IASW.

We headed in and the restaurant was practically empty. Since we weren’t too hungry, DH and I decided to split a meal. I was hoping to get the veggie pizza that we had a couple of trips ago but it appears to be off the menu so we settled for a plain cheese pizza. The CM said we could get a side and as I was hemming and hawing about what to get she mentioned that they have really good fries so that’s what we got.

IMG_9831.jpg

DD picked a grilled cheese. It looked pretty dried out to me but she said it was really good:confused3.

IMG_9832.jpg

We were able to score a table overlooking IASW and DD was in heaven waving at the boats going by.:cloud9:

Our pizza was okay – not the best pizza by any means but it filled the void::yes::. This is another CS location that has added gelato as a dessert option so we ordered chocolate gelato with our meal. It was very tasty and we shared it three ways.

Pinnochio’s isn’t one of my top picks for CS but it is a nostalgic favorite so we seem to eat here at least once per trip. Cost OOP would’ve been $22 (1 adult and 1 child credit used).

Once we got back to the resort I realized that we had five or so snack credits left to use up before our noon DME pick-up the next day so we headed to Gasparilla’s in search of a Mickey ice cream sandwich, which DD had been wanting the entire trip. Unfortunately Gasparilla’s didn’t have any in the case so she had to settle for cookies and cream fro-yo from the self serve machine.

IMG_9878.jpg

I helped her out with it and it was very tasty.

DH got a Mickey rice crispy treat, which I also helped him out with (had to steal one of those chocolate covered ears:rotfl:):

IMG_9879.jpg

OOP cost for these snacks would’ve been about $8.

I love the Nemo dessert at Coral Reef! My DH and I ate there in November and didn't order dessert, as nothing on the menu appealed to us and from your review it sounds like we didn't miss anything.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at coral reef. We went last year and loved it! We did have a better table than that though.

Great reviews! I have enjoyed reading along.

I am curious to know what you thought about the DP vs. paying out of pocket. Did you feel it was a good value? Or did you feel like you were ordering more things, like desert, than you normally would. Just wondering what your thoughts were on the subject. And thank you for all your great reviews. They have just been excellent.

I don't think you missed out. The chocolate wave wasn't bad it just didn't wow me, kwim?

I'm going to include some final thoughts about DDP vs. OOP in my last update!

Sadly our last morning was upon us all too soon:sad1:. We decided to head over to MK one last time for a few rides and to use up our remaining CS credits on an early (very early!) lunch.

We needed just a little nosh to tide us over so we stopped at the Chesire Café near the teacups and used two snack credits on a bottle of orange juice and a blueberry muffin.

IMG_9901.jpg

I found it interesting that this location is sponsored by Minute Maid but the oj was Simply Orange (I looked it up later and learned that MM founded Simply Orange). Anyway, the muffin was prepackaged and reminded me of an Otis Spunkmeyer muffin. It wasn’t anything earth shattering but it served its purpose.

IMG_9902.jpg

We saw that CHH opened for lunch at 10:30 a.m. so we decided to head over there shortly after that time. I can’t remember the last time I ate lunch so early! While DH waited for the food (which took a surprisingly long time given that there was only one other family in there), DD and I headed upstairs to snag a table overlooking Fantasyland. We were sad to see that all the windows were covered with felt. On our first visit here earlier in the week one window was covered but it had been expanded to the whole side now.

IMG_9919.jpg

Being the snoop that I am :rolleyes1, I pulled the felt back a teeny bit to confirm the reason for the covering – there is a view right into the construction going on at the old skyway exit.

We were going to sit on the other side of the room overlooking the steamboat, but oddly the tables were really dirty – crumbs, salt and little bits of dried up broccoli pieces. Eww:sad2:. Given the early hour, I can only assume that someone missed cleaning that section the night before:confused3. So with that we headed back downstairs to eat.

End-of-trip depression had set in by now so I’m sorry I only have one lone food picture. DH and I each ordered a sandwich – one tuna, one hummus and shared. DD had the nuggets again. For dessert we each got the apple cobbler, which DH kindly reminded me I have not photographed in the past (first time we’ve had it) so here’s a picture of his half-eaten (oops!).

IMG_9920.jpg

The sandwiches were delicious as usual:thumbsup2 – the multigrain bread is hearty, the tuna fresh and good quality, and the hummus a nice change of pace from typical sandwiches. The cobbler was good but probably not something I would’ve ordered if we didn’t have dessert included with the DDP. CHH remains one of my all-time favorite Disney CS locations and I think we’ll always fit in at least one meal here during each trip. Cost OOP for this meal would’ve been $38.

On our way out of the park we knew we had to get DD that Mickey ice cream sandwich she’d been wanting so we stopped at a cart near the hub and got one with our lonely last snack credit. We found a table outside of Casey’s for her to sit and enjoy it while I soaked in the last moments in the bubble:cloud9:.

IMG_9921.jpg

******

So on to my final thoughts about DDP vs. OOP:

Strictly by the numbers we came out slightly ahead by using the DDP. Our cost for the DDP was $590 and the cost OOP for all that we ate using credits would’ve been about $655, so a savings of about $65. I didn’t include the cost of the mugs in here because honestly, we hardly used them and while they are cute souvenirs, they aren’t something I think we’d ever buy on our own. But if I included the value of the mugs our savings probably pushes close to the $100 mark.

We could’ve come out even further ahead if we’d done a couple things differently – 1) used our snack credits for items closer to the $4 mark instead of so many low-priced breakfast items (like bottles of orange juice, which I think ran about $2.59) and 2) not used one of our TS credits for a character breakfast. With that said, we used the plan how it best worked for us, not necessarily to get the biggest savings, so I’m not saying we would’ve done that differently, just pointing out how YMMV. I did want to at least break even and we did even better than that so I’m happy:goodvibes.

We decide whether or not to purchase the DDP on a trip-by-trip basis. On this trip, since we were doing several fixed-price meals (Biergarten, ‘Ohana dinner and originally Akershus, which we changed to Tusker House when we switched resorts), I felt it made sense this time around. When we’re planning to do a trip with the majority of our TS meals being a la carte, it doesn’t make as much sense for us because DH and I often like to split one appetizer, one dessert and each get our own entrée. I didn’t keep close track of how much we spent OOP over and above what was included on the DDP. The biggest expense was our OOP dinner at Citricos and other than that it was mainly adding a few things, like cereal and milk, at breakfast (still annoys me that cereal and milk is now considered an entrée not a snack credit, even though it’s cheaper than some snack credit options:sad2:).

The inclusion of dessert with the CS meal has always been something I’m not a fan of, TBH. In reality, there are only a few CS places that I think I would order dessert at if I was paying OOP (Sunshine Seasons comes to mind, as does Tangierine for that delish baklava). I just don’t need all that dessert and I’m not a fan of many of the CS dessert options. With that said, I didn’t feel overwhelmed by dessert this time around (maybe because it was a short trip) and I was heartened to see some interesting options have been added like the gelato we enjoyed at a couple of places.

So that’s a wrap on my dining reviews. Thank you so much for reading along and commenting – I really enjoyed sharing it with all of you!:grouphug:

Thanks so much for your reviews and thoughts on the DDP. It's really interesting for me to hear how it works for people. We don't tend to eat hte majority of meals onsite when we visit WDW so the DDP would hardly ever work for us. This year, however, we have 6 nights at the Beach Clob and have quite a few meals planned so are considering adding the DDP to our booking. We are still number-crunching to see if it will save us money but, like you, if ordering a la carte, we might well share appies and dessert so it's hard to know. Plus, our DS is 9 but very adventurous and isn't likely to be satisfied with a lot of the kids options.

Anyway, thanks again for your reviews. I look forward to your next visit and your next lot of reviews :)
