I must admit that I was too chicken to call from my house, I called from a friend's house when her parents were out. We pretended that we were 18 year old hotties....we weren't.

oh ya I remember them! Dont remember any charges though, my mom worked at the tel co so she got our phone for free!

That's OK...I grew up in the 80's and thought maybe this was talking about those party lines too. I've never actually had one but I did hear about them, etc...

Never called any other type of party line. The only thing I did call was the "Jenny" phone number (don't think I should post it but I still remember it ) which basically just said "Thank you for listening to my song on X radio station" -- unbeknowst to ME....that was a pay call. If I had known I wouldn't have done it but I didn't realize it and made it a game to see how many times I could get through once my friend told me it was the recording (hadn't thought to do it before then)...you would get lots of busy signals (side note -- Do kids today KNOW what a busy signal IS? I had to explain that to a 5th grader recently... he called his mom on my cell phone and it seemed to be a while so I asked if it went through and his answer was "it's making this weird noise" -- I listened and it was a busy signal. I guess with voicemail now/call waiting it's probably not as common!)

Anyway --Each call was .50!!! My parents asked me if I made the calls at first I said no because I had no idea and then after they said the number and it registered to me what the number was, OOPS!!! I honestly don't remember getting into that much trouble. Yes my parents were mad but I think they realized I honestly had no idea about the cost and pretty much told me not to do that again.
