Parking "Hacks"

Guess I am confused.... I thought they didn't want people parking at DTD and going to a park.... hence the reason there are no longer buses from DTD to the parks.... too much of this WAS going on.

True or not?

True.

I think some posters may have asked Edgar Disney, of Rochester, New York
if he cares if guests park at DTD and then go to the parks.

Edgar replied, "Who cares where they park, as long as it's not on my lawn!"

On a related note, anyone got any tips on bypassing the front gate? $80+ a ticket isn't bad, but it adds up after a couple of days...

Your right, maybe we can climb the fence or something. I have a friend that does make up, she might be able to make us look like trees or something.

Pay the fee, as it will save you a lot of hassle, time, and just general overall grumpiness.

I would not go in the summer. It is so miserable because of the heat and crowds.

Read what wrong??? Disney has no issue with you parking at DTD and heading to a resort...even if it means you are then going to a park. In all reality, this just doesn't happen all that much. The vast majority of people have decided it just isn't worth the time and effort involved, and they drive to the desired park. There has even been signage up that tells you how to get to a park. It's just a tempest in a teapot.
Parking at the resorts is a whole different issue. Will Disney tow your car if you park at the CR/Polynesian/GF all day? No, most likely not. Do they encourage this practice? No, they do not. Yes, there may be plenty of parking available at one of these resorts, but that doesn't mean that anyone can now head there and park for the day, unless they have valet parked. If everyone started doing this, there would be no room for guests to park at their own resort. And believe me, if word got out that everyone can park wherever they wish to, you would find a ton of guests just driving to the CR and parking there...it's so much easier to access MK from there vs TTC.
I don't much care what people do...it's up to each person to make that choice for themselves. Some feel it's a violation of Disney policy, others don't. The problem is that Disney has no signage up that states you can't leave your car there all day....yes, they do at certain times of the year. So, I suppose I can only assume that they don't care if you do it at less busy times of year. But, we all know what happens when you 'assume'.

I don't think I ever heard an argument against something make it sound like one would be crazy not too. (bolded part) Not a lawyer are you??:rotfl:

BTW...word just got out with your post.

Well....I've asked three different bus drivers, on three different times, and gotten pretty much the exact same answer...Disney stopped the DTD to park buses because there really wasn't all that much need. They found that they were running nearly empty buses. So, it wasn't cost efficient.
I was told that the bus drivers have been instructed to give advice on how best to reach a particular park if asked by a DTD guest.
Now, they could all have been spouting the 'company line' but who cares??? If Disney wanted to make a change, and make it less desirable to park at DTD and bus to a park it would be very easy to do. Just make it cost to park....validate slips if you shop/eat in DTD. Or just make it cost to park between the hours of 9am and 3pm. Whatever. It's really a non-issue, except here on these boards.

Word is out already....obviously. And that's why I try to respond with almost the exact same thing each and every single time this question gets asked...and it gets asked constantly over on the Transportation board. Believe me, if Disney doesn't want you parking in a resort at a specific time, you won't be parking at that resort. I have seen them put up jersey barriers at BW during Food and Wine Festival time!!! It's not pretty!!!

Just read this whole thing. Whew.

Yes it can get expensive paying for parking, but those of us staying onsite pay for it too- its built into our room charges.

Lucky you did some research and found out about the parking fees, now you can build them into your trip budget! Some people don't even realise there are fees to park when going to the parks, but even parks like Six Flags charge for parking...

And I sure would hate to pay for a towing fee or ticket instead of a parking fee- that would cost even more!

Don't risk it- just save up for it!

Have fun!

I think this is the best answer. The OP found out, knows about it now, can budget for it!

I budget our trips in chunks...this is the parking (for Universal resort, that is, since we have yet to stay offsite for our WDW vacation portion) chunk, this is the tips chunk, this is that, etc etc. When you know you have that money and it's earmarked for a specific thing, it's awesome! And I always over budget for each bit, so I have the chance to bring some money home and put it back in the Trips account.

She does seem to be under the impression that it is more than $14 per day (maybe because it is more at Universal--is that correct?).

No, not really. Well, unless you're paying ~$15 to park at the onsite resort and then driving over to the parks parking lot and paying about the same amount again, but I don't think anyone does that. Doesn't make sense. The walk from the parking lot isn't much different than the walk from the resorts, and the parking lot doesn't have boats or pedi-cabs or shuttles from it!

I also just found out TODAY that a Tables in Wonderland card can cover parking if you dine in the park. Since we usually do, that's another way for me to get more for my parking dollars.

Of course, there are very specific hours and rules set up for that.

To quote the immortal words of some rapper whose name escapes me because I never knew it, "Don't start no {edit}, won't be no {edit}."

All I've ever heard was "don't start none won't be none", and I've heard it from Will Smith....

So unfair!!! What do they have against small cars?????

(:stir:)

Ha!

Maybe you can look in to the cost of your current hotel, factor in discount codes and parking and see if staying off site makes sense.

He said they are getting the timeshare free, though they might pay for the dues. Doubt that compares to the parking cost total to make it worth it to stay onsite...

Maybe it is hit-or-miss. :confused3

It's absolutely hit or miss. We went for breakfast at Kona, and on the way out I asked Concierge for info on how to get to the MK area parking lot (to spend our last couple hours of our vacation at MK), and I was told specifically by two CMs at the desk (with another CM listening and nodding) that it would be silly to move the car, that they've never had anyone towed for parking too long, and that I should just leave my car. And they never gave me info on how to get to the other lot. So...we left the car.

Doubt I'd do it again, and I definitely wouldn't do it without a similar conversation with the CMs, but it was not the answer I was expecting (especially since I'd ASKED them for info...this was our first trip, and most of the trip we'd just been following my WDW-fanatic family around), and I wouldn't expect it in the future. But it does paint a picture of it all being VERY hit or miss!

This 3 hour parking pass thing should really be put to rest at this point but I know I won't be able to do that. This pass may have existed at some point in history, but now it is pretty much Urban Disney legend.

I've never seen it either, but others have, so it's not a myth.

What is the purpose of leaving this thread open? In other areas of DIS they have specific info on refillable resort mugs or pool hopping and they state what the facts are and still allow people to ask questions about scenarios that have not been addressed. I just don't see why people want to continue to just dredge this until everyone has been mocked or irritated.

Because those threads get UGLY. This topic is just relatively annoying. Nowhere near the ugliness of pools and mugs (and tips).

But I say, just go with glocon's info! Now you know, so now you can budget!

(oh, and if you're meeting someone, do NOT park at DTD etc etc. a local relative of ours texted me the whole way from getting to DTD parking, getting in the line for transport, getting somewhere, walking, getting into the gates, etc....it took OVER 2 hours for her family to get to us after hitting Disney property. OMG. Don't do that to someone you're meeting....I would have paid for their parking if I'd known it was going to take them that long to avoid the parking fees....)

Well....I've asked three different bus drivers, on three different times, and gotten pretty much the exact same answer...Disney stopped the DTD to park buses because there really wasn't all that much need.

Well, asking a bus driver would certainly be the most reliable information that one could get. I'm sure they sit in on all management meetings and if the can't make it get a call from the CEO to inform them about decisions. Getting information from them is pretty close to getting no information at all.

I would have to say that I cannot accept that Disney WANTS you to park there. I think that their reaction to people parking there hinges on many circumstances. The largest being how much abuse is happening. If I had a retail place in DTD (remember they are not all owned by Disney) and I felt that potential customers were having problems finding parking places close to my establishment...phone lines would be on fire. It is probably mind numbing how much they pay for that retail space.

So it becomes strictly a cost issue, if it is going to cost more to enforce the parking rules then to let them slide, they will let them slide. It is the same logic used when they or someone else pays out on a lawsuit that is unfounded. If it is cheaper to make them go away then to fight it...they make them go away. If more and more start to use it then they will indeed care, but for now the DTD problem was solved by the lack of direct transportation to the parks. Not enough people are foolish enough to waste that much time and energy to save $14.00. If it got to be a big issue they would find a way to enforce it.

The biggest most immediate problem is the resort question. How do you enforce that without making it difficult for those that legitimately have business at the resorts? How do you guarantee that the folks using the parking areas are not lying or fabricating, if that sounds better, their way into the free parking?

Still would be too much hassle for me. I am a believer that if I cannot afford $14.00 per day to park close to the parks then I will immediately come to the conclusion that I must have some more pressing places to spend my money then WDW. That's cutting it way, way too close for me.
