Yes, you can walk from the IG entrance of Epcot to the Studios. It depends how fast you walk, but I'd say 15-20 minutes if you are a very fast walker (like us) and 30-40 if you stroll.
It is usually faster than the boat unless the boat is there and ready to leave when you arrive at the dock.
We do this too. DS is in a wheelchair and it is much faster for us. Loading, unloading, water levels etc. I agree with Bob, it is for us a 20 min walk. This is one of my favorite WDW walks as a matter of fact but once you pass under the bridge and away from the Epcot resorts there is almost no shade on the path and it can get very hot.
Have to disagree...it's a lot less than 3 miles. And walking is much quicker unless the boat is there when you leave the park. Or unless you walk really slowly.
You do not have to walk along the boardwalk. You have the option of walking on the other side of the lake where the Beach and Yacht clubs are located. This path and the boardwalk path meet at the bridge that connects to the Swan/Dolphin.
It's a nice walk on a cooler day, but walking from Epcot to MGM in July on a hot, humid day ( especially if walking briskly ) will be a hike, to be sure. You're likely to find yourselves "all aglow" once you arrive at MGM too.
If I remember correctly, the actual distance is just over a mile. It is a nice stroll except during a downpour and then there is very little cover to stay dry.
