Park Strollers vs. "Off-Site" Rental

Just curious if anyone has used the Disney strollers they have available for rent...

I have an 8 yo son with down syndrome, and although he can walk, he is unable to walk or stand for long periods of time due to his low muscle tone.

I plan to rent a stroller, but wondered if the park strollers are large enough and can hold his weight (approx. 65 lbs). He won't sit in the stroller all the time, but will need it a good part of the time.

If park strollers aren't big enough, we'll consider renting something from one of the off-park companies. Just trying to get info in advance so that we know what to do. :confused3

Thanks!
T.

I'm planning on renting a Maclaren Major off site. I figure we'll need it at the resort anyway. We use a Maclaren Major at home and love it, we just can't fit it in the car for the trip.

I'm leaning more towards the McClaren...keep hearing positive things and read good stuff on the boards...so that may be the way to go for the week...since it will be nice to have at the hotel...and DTD.

Thanks for your input. Have you ever rented off site before? Any preference? This will be our first trip to WDW! Very excited to see how my son reacts...if nothing else, we'll walk around the parks and enjoy swimming in the pool (his favorite thing to do.) :)

Thanks again.

The park strollers would certainly be large enough. You could either rent a single or a double. There is a picture of the single strollers in the disABILITIES FAQs thread, post 2. The double strollers are the same, just twice as wide.
There is also information in that thread about renting special needs strollers from off-site.

But, as ecki mentioned, having one with you all the time is pretty nice for at the resort.

TTC to Magic Kingdom requires walking blocks to the ferry or Monorail then from the station to the rental area inside the park. For me it is hard enough for me alone to deal with guide maps and handing over tickets let alone carrying a kid. Expect at least one block and up to a quarter mile or more in walking from the parking lot or bus drop off point to where you get the strollers in park. Also having a stroller at your room means you can pack the stroller and not carry things. If your son wants to walk let him but in the long run it adds up quick.

Good luck on your vacation.
