Not to be a Debbie downer and I know we've all discussed and ranted about those little things that get under your skin parade push ins etc but on my last trip I found another one that I can't get my head around. Why do people get to parking lot and then decide that's the perfect place to put sunscreen on the entire family? Worse yet those that do it at the turnstiles spraying everyone else around them.

Can you not put it on when you get dressed in the morning? This is like 9.30am so it ain't like you're ready for a top up.

Ok in true Elsa style i shall 'let it go'

Well, if they drove to the park, I can understand not applying it before getting to the parking lot, I guess. Some sunscreens do discolor the leather/plastics of car interiors over time. But I would definitely apply it in the parking lot, near the car...not while in the waiting queue. I like the spray on type, and since I did not drive on this trip, I just applied it while getting dressed that morning. I did not need to reapply it during the day, I did not burn even while standing in the direct sun at parade time. And I have fair skin.

I know I don't like to put it on when I get dressed in the morning, any sunscreen I use (lotion or spray on) I feel sticky after I apply it and then I think "why did I just shower" so I usually shower, dress for the day, head to the cafeteria and eat breakfast, then walk back to the room, and then apply the sunscreen and hop on the bus.

I don't carry extra with me, but if I did, and I was driving, I would probably wait till I got to the parking lot to apply it. Although I dislike being in the sun so I try to walk in the shady spots and use mother nature's sunscreen ;-)

Chuck..what brand do you use. I burn faster because of my meds.

I burn very easily so apply sunblock before I leave the hotel room (or home when we are heading to the beach).
That said, a few years back I applied a Neutrogena sunblock before heading out. I rested my arm on the console of my husband's new car and the plastic peeled!
So I can see why people wait for the parking lot!
I changed to Bullfrog Gel and try not to rest my arms on anything..

Guilty. We put on sunscreen in the parking lot because we don't want to ruin the interior of our vehicle. We also don't want to spray it inside the hotel either. That is even worse. It is rude to spray around a lot of people so the parking lot is a better alternative. We try to pay attention to wind direction and folks passing by.

So, that is why we spray in the parking lot. Hope that helps your puzzlement.

Ok not destroying your car makes sense. I've never had that problem although the kids stroller has a nice coating of sunscreen on it.

I hate the sunscreen battle with the kid but it's worth it.

I'm curious those that damage the car, how many of you applied the sunscreen and then got in the car, and how many waited 15 to 20 mins before getting in the car.

The reason I ask is because according to the American Academy of Dermatology you should apply the sunscreen 15 mins before going out to allow the sunscreen to be absorbed into your skin, otherwise it won't work. I'm wondering if those 15 mins allow the sunscreen to be absorbed and thus damage won't happen, or is it just having on your body causes damage.

My armrest was discolored by sunscreen. Actually, it was on my Mom's side of the car, she always used sunscreen even at home...put it on every morning, and you know ladies...for most it takes them 15 to 20 minutes after doing make-up hair, making sure the stove is off, and locking up the house...so I can't think of any time she applied the screen and then hopped right into the car.

I smell a new business opportunity..... Plastic Car Seat Covers and Plastic Arm Rest Covers, just like back in the day when people covered their couches :rotfl2:

I can only imagine the horror of getting into your car after a long day and having to sit on that hot plastic! Aghhh.

Fabric protector spray might be the best bet.

My kids (13 year old twin girls) like the spray on. Fine. But it is greasy all day. After having the grease build up on the back seat of the car after a week of day camp at SeaWorld, we are parking lot sprayers.

I am aware you are supposed to have it on 20 minutes prior to sun exposure. Since we usually hit parks in the early morning before the sun is direct, we are okay.

Washable terry cloth covers maybe a good idea, or disposable paper covers with a thin plastic backing. But not plastic. ;)

Just like that piece of paper the car dealer puts on your floor when you take it in for a $20 item that becomes a $500 repair :)

After having a face full of spray from a woman spraying her children liberally and thoughtlessly (I wasn't her only victim) while waiting for RD I know where you are coming from. Car park sounds like a better place to do it.
