Parents of College Freshman who are now Sophomores... UpDate 7/28/09

I just saw the thread about this year's freshmen, and searched for last year's :upsidedow

DS had a pretty good year, all things considered. grades could have been better, second semester was MUCH better than the first. most importantly, we kept the scholarship for this year ;)

getting ready to start thinking about the fall semester. DS is still waiting on his housing letter. I paid tuition last week. we need to go through everything and see what needs to be replenished .. I know he needs a new memory foam thing, and maybe new sheets.

overall, the summer has been good. DS has spent most of the summer working and will do that until the week he goes back (8/22). Our youngest DD is already dreading him leaving, but we keep redirecting her to her own first day of 2nd grade next week! And we're planning our fall break vacation, luckily DS has a few days off at the same time, so he's flying to Florida to meet us at WDW, which will be fun!

Mine worked all summer in the college city :( From asking me what dryer sheets were the first week to living on his own in a strange city the next summer; it was very much a year of growth.

Mine had a great year this past year. He has been working since he got home and will work until the end of Aug. He is starting to get some things together for his apartment on campus. He has even experimented with my crockpot so he has some extra meals.

Well mine was coming home every weekend at the start of the year. School is only about 2 hours away. Of course there was a girlfriend involved and she was going to a college that is 2 hours away in the other direction. She switched to his college for Spring Semester and they didn't come home every weekend after that. They both have lined up apartments with other roommates for Fall. We figured the apartment rent and him buying his own food would be much cheaper than on campus housing. DS is working full time this summer and while he hates his job at least he has one! He doesn't have to go back to school until late September. So we are trying to get him and his roommate to figure out what they need. We have lots of stuff he can take as his grandparents just downsized to a smaller home.

Hi everyone - amazing the difference a year makes! We survived, we even thrived and best of all our kids grew up considerably.

DS has had a super busy summer - he is working at the water park as usual and at his winter job. Some weeks he puts in 75 or so hours. He went off to Las Vegas last week to visit several dorm mates and a few have stayed with us this summer for a visit. He flew down and had a great time. He is also a hired football coach at his former high school. The boy loves to use a whistle! :lmao:

DS decided he did not want to be a Resident Aide (there went the free room and board) the rules were pretty restrictive including outside work off campus which was a problem since he doesn't want to give up his sales job and he just didn't want to do it. We agreed to pay his housing costs less groceries for the school year and he will pay his own tuition and groceries which is why he has been working his hiney off all summer. DS will be moving into off campus student housing in mid August. His new digs will be a 5bed/5bath townhouse that is 1 block from campus. It is substantially less expensive than a dorm and comes with a 12 month lease, he will not be home for Christmas break or next summer. Honestly I am okay with this, he misses his friends and can be quite moody. While it has been nice having him home he disrupts our new routines and as much as we love him we too are looking forward to him heading back to school.

Gone is the apprehension of new roomies, new campus, new courses and just plain being in college. DS is excited to return to school and we know he can handle it.

I was reading the new parents of college freshman thread and I think back. Look how far we have come and better yet look how far our kids have come!
