Parenthetically Speaking

I AM USUALLY A STICKLER ON USAGE OF CORRECT GRAMMAR AS WELL, HOWEVER, I FIND THE DISNEY FILES STYLE A DEPARTURE FROM THE USUAL MAGAZINES THAT I READ. BTW THE WAY, I AM NOT YELLING...MY KIDS HAVE THE SHIFT KEY ON MY COMPUTER STUCK WHERE I CAN'T TYPE IN THE LOWER CASE FONT.

As far as the style, I don't necessarily mind it, but I did find myself rolling my eyes a little bit more than usual with the most recent issue. That said, I don't necessarily care how it's written, as long as the content is interesting...

I think the style can be kind of cutesy, but I don't mind it that much. I also have a lifetime addiction to parenthetical comments, though. Back in the old days of the DIS, I made myself a lime green button with "(jenelope)" on it because I rarely posted without something framed in parentheses. If it was drier, "just facts" writing, it would bother me more. I tend to fight parenthetical comments in my work writing.

you know did not even read the thing - just looked at the pictures - yes there are better pictures posted here -

then my brother (who is still upset that I sold OKW for BLT) came by and took the magazine plus the points chart 2010 with him to look at - hope to get it back sometime this year.

he has not been to WDW since BLT was opened and probably won't until 2010 or later.

I had noticed before, but it was really obvious this time. Not sure how I feel about it. It's cute at first, but could get really old.

Bring back Vacation Magic!!

If it could only happen!

Boy! Do I miss it, those were the days we received info about the resorts etc. Not a fan of Disney Files, it's a bit better than in the beginning but it doesn't begin ti compare to Vacation Magic!

agree with you completely - loved vacation magic - it was about DVC - not all the other junk about Disney.

now WDW information is great - and now maybe because GVC is opening maybe DL.

but the other junk - no

also missed the letters from other DVC members - it feel more like a family.

<rant mode on>

Have you ever noticed the style of writing used in the DVC Disney Files magazine? How it tends to be rather silly and not wholly professional? I’m not looking for dry as dust technical writing but must they always try to be ‘witty’ when informational will do? :rolleyes1

Geez, I sound like a witch don’t I? Sorry, but this latest issue just pushed me over the edge. :confused3 Why must they write little asides in parentheses all the time? The letter from the editor alone has eight remarks in parentheses ranging from witty remarks to useful information. If it’s important enough to be on the page then remove the parentheses, if not then leave it off.

I realize many readers enjoy this casual style and are scratching their heads over my statements but may I just say how much I miss the old Disney Magazine? That magazine was both informative and a joy to read. Disney Files could learn a lot from them.

Let the flaming begin

I used to be a proofreader for an academic journal and it's all I can do not to mark up the page! I understand it should be an easy read, but they can still use proper grammar. We all use a relaxed style on the boards and in our emails but I think printed matter is a little different.

I do miss informative content more.

Too funny; I JUST thought the same thing when it arrived.

I also proofread and copyedit professionally and the style they're using for Disney Files verges on vernacular.

I think humor has its place, but the random goofyness throughout the magazine just makes me feel like I'm being patronized.

Also, I was totally annoyed at the included payment envelope to join the political action committee-our fearless DVC leader now has LESS time to spend on DVC because he's taking on a new commitment, and we're supposed to pony up money, yeah, um, not....

OP, I was so glad to see this thread, to know that I'm not the only one who's thought that. It's annoyed me for a while, not just with this last issue, but the asides were definitely kicked-up a notch in the latest one. It's difficult to read and just inane. I read it cover-to-cover because I enjoy the content, but I had to break it up into two occasions this time because I just couldn't take it.

If you don't like the writing style or the content - don't read it! It's not worth picking it apart - it is for entertainment purposes only.

More "factual" information comes through in the emails which are more timely anyway.

You cannot be a DVC member without having some "silly" bone in your body - I think it is time for a visit to the Mouse to get it back.:rolleyes1

However, this is the only source of information that I get from DVC, so I do need to read it. It's not just for entertainment purposes.

And it should appeal to all members, not just the ones who read comic books. ;)

You don't think it's actually *free*, do you? It may be for entertainment, but I'm betting we're paying for it out of our dues, somewhere.

I've been to Disney 49 times, I have lots of silly bones.

I also have an excellent grasp of clear voice and good grammar, and I wasn't seeing either in this issue.

Well as usual Disney is tying to appeal to its audience. Being DVC owners you know that is not the individual but "your last name" Family. So the rag I mean mag is for DD8, DD12, DS10, DW33 DGD65 DGM58 and whoever else included in your Disney escapades. I would not be suprised how many parents don't sit down and share it with the kids right away. It's one of those "Let's get excited about Disney!" enabler/marketing tools.

I actually enjoy it.

The quirky (if sometimes juvenile) humor is my cup of tea! Cleary (as noted above and here) I am a big fan of parenthesis as well!

The envelope is addressed to me (for the contract with my name first) or my husband (for the contracts with his name first) - we get two copies. It doesn't come to the XX Family. It's for members and children aren't the member. If they were the member, they, too, would have a blue member card and their SSN would be on record.

I have only read two issues--as we are newer members--but both times I got the impression that the magazine was directed towards the kids. Afterall, they are the ones who usually encourage us to break down and "do more/spend more."

The asides were very aparent this time around. I think their use is absolutely deliberate. The editorial staff wants us to remember how "in" we are as a result of our membership. They even let us in on the cool inside jokes and information.
