Pardon me while I whine for a bit

I'm feeling just a bit sorry for myself right now. :sad1: Back in June, I fell down the stairs outside the Gran Fiesta boat ride in EPCOT. I broke my leg (tibia and fibula) and had to have surgery in FL Hospital in Orlando. It was not a pretty thing at all! I ended up with 2 rods and several screws holding all the pieces of my bones together. Plus, more than a week later I found out my arm was fractured too. I guess it's true that one pain can cancel out another.

Fast forward to about 3 weeks ago. My bones have healed pretty well and I'm walking again; with a limp but walking. I go to physical therapy and am progressing pretty well. Then this odd lump comes up on the top of my foot. My PT has no clue what it could be. It doesn't respond to ice or elevation and it kind of burns and when you press it my toes tingle. Went to see my orthopedic doctor and he says it's probably a ganglion cyst and will have to be surgically removed. I'm having a MRI then he and I will discuss what's next. Right now, it hurts and burns like the dickens. The surgery will put me back in a cast for 1 - 3 weeks and back on crutches. :scared1: Just in time for the holidays. Nice.

Okay, whining is over. If you read all this, you deserve a big hug for being nice. :grouphug:

 Sometimes whining makes me feel better, I hope it helped you a bit. :goodvibes

Poor you  That has been quite a ride...

I hope it gets better soon, and whine all you like :grouphug:

It is ok to whine about things that bother your lifestyle.... I hope you get better soon...

 sorry you are hurting:hug:

A tibia/fibula break is a very tough one, as I am sure you know. I am sorry your progress will be impeded with this new problem. But everything will heal, time will take care of all that. Hang in there, you will be a stronger person for all you have gone through! :)

Wow, your post made me sick, boy when it rains it pours, what happen was the steps wet or something or did you just trip on your own feet? I hate when crap like this happens.

I hope you make a swift recovery and Godspeed to you!

I had no idea until I broke my own leg how LONG it takes for those bones to heal. I try to keep my attitude positive but it's hard when I'm in pain. I'm lucky that I had an awesome surgeon in Orlando. I'm lucky that my oldest son & his family was with us to help with the younger kids. I'm lucky that I'm a teacher and this happened in June. That gave me 2 full months of time off and no loss of pay. I'm lucky that I had no infections or other more serious complications. I'm lucky that my family and friends provided us with dinners almost every night for 2 months. So many things to be grateful for and I try not to forget it. I have a new appreciation for the struggles of anyone in a wheelchair or on crutches.

The steps were not wet that I noticed. I'm still not sure what happened. I was walking, took that first step at the top, and kept going until my foot came down on which ever step it finally met. I knew I was falling right away and was trying to catch myself by hanging onto the handrail. I knew immediately after impact that my leg was broken and I grabbed it. Next thing I knew I was laying on the sidewalk looking back up at the Mayan Temple. Passersby came running to my aide while hubs ran to the nearest cm who called 911. In a matter of minutes, I was under the care of Reedy Creek EMTs.

That is an awful lot to go through. My heart goes out to you. I am hoping the next surgery goes better then expected. And look on the bright side you have an excuse to avoid the holiday crowds and shop online this year. I am glad you have so many friends and family to support you and that is more then most people have in your same situation.

i am so, so sorry for what you're going through, and i pray you have an uneventful, successful surgery and quick recovery.

Ouch! Sorry that you're experiencing a setback of sorts. Best wishes for a speedy recovery...and a much better return trip to the World! :)

Keep countin' those blessin's, Darlin'. :thumbsup2

You are one strong woman to have gone thru all you have and still have such a great attitude. I guess I didn't see your first post as whinin' that much, it's a li'l setback 'n you're gonna be even stronger for it!!

Before ya know it, you'll be tellin' us "remember last year when I was all laid up with that broken leg 'n ...." And next year is gonna be better than this year coz next year, this year will just be a memory.

I can feel for you and your husband. I'm on his end. My husband was in a motorcycle accident in late May of this year. He broke his femur, tibia, and fibula. He has a rod in the top part. And he has plates and about 30 pins in the bottom part. He was lucky that he had lots of sick leave on the books for the summer. He had a great surgeon in upstate NY. And a wonderful PT team.

He's a college teacher and was starting a new job mid August. So we moved south at the beginning of August and he was doing well. Driving himself to work and functioning on his own. And then he started feeling under the weather the week before Labor Day. Then we noticed a strange bump on his bad leg that Sunday and took him to the ED.

While in the ED, the infection spread throughout the leg and he spent 11 more days in the hospital and 6 weeks hooked up to a Wound V.A.C. machine and a constant IV antibiotic bag.

So just a couple weeks ago, he finally got unhooked from all the bags and is back to PT learning to walk. We're hoping he can be walking on his own, albiet slowly by Christmas.

And. . . they want to go in and take all that hardware out once he's completely healed to avoid future infections. But that means cutting his leg back open and all those holes in his bones from where they take the pins out and he'll be back on crutches for 6+ weeks again.

As you can imagine, he's not looking forward to that.

You poor thing.. :( I'm not even going to tell you to "look on the bright side" because that's extremely annoying when you just need to vent and have people say nothing more than, "I understand.."

Hope your recovery goes smoothly..

You have an amazingly positive attitude! I'm sure that has helped you heal already and will continue to help you in the future.
